About Carlena
Carlena “CrazyCee” Gourdine is an accomplished producer, director, choreographer, author, hip-hop educator, mentor, motivational speaker, and serial entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience across television, stage, film, live entertainment, public speaking, and community arts education. She is the founder and creative force behind CrazyCee Productions and Carlena Gourdine’s Learning Institute 4 The Urban Arts, where she has trained and mentored youth, teens, and adults through professional performance instruction, artist development, mental-health awareness, human development, discipline, and self-respect.
As an author, Carlena creates books rooted in truth, healing, personal development, empowerment, and lived experience, including Stop Explaining Yourself. Her work and career have been recognized through numerous publications and professional platforms, including Dance Mogul Magazine, and she has delivered public-speaking presentations and keynote addresses at colleges and community events.
Currently based in New York and preparing to relocate to Austin, Texas, Carlena is rebuilding and expanding the CrazyCee Empire through original theatrical productions, books and media, professional training, fashion, networking events, and developing partnerships with performance and studio spaces. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the three D’s that have guided me since 1997: Discipline, Dedication, and Determination. Discipline keeps me consistent, dedication keeps me committed to my purpose, and determination helps me continue even when I must rebuild from the ground up. My success also comes from an uncompromising work ethic, decades of hands-on experience, and a willingness to learn from every setback. I remain authentic, protect my integrity, and never forget that my work is bigger than me. My goal is to create opportunities, develop talent, and “teach to each” so that others can turn their passion into purpose.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to protect my name, master my craft, and never compromise my integrity for an opportunity. Talent may attract attention, but preparation, professionalism, and strong work ethics create longevity. I learned that every open door is not necessarily the right door especially when entering requires you to diminish yourself or abandon your values. Sometimes the greatest career move is creating your own opportunity, building your own platform, and then opening that platform for others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know who you are before the industry tries to define you. Master your craft, learn the business behind your talent, read every agreement, protect your intellectual property, and establish clear boundaries. Never confuse attention with respect or exposure with a genuine opportunity. You should not have to compromise your body, identity, dignity, or values to earn a seat at the table. Build your reputation through preparation, reliability, professionalism, and strong work ethics. Ask questions, seek trustworthy mentors, network with purpose, and support other women as you grow. Your talent may open the door, but your discipline, character, and business knowledge will determine how long you remain.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in entertainment and urban arts today is protecting authenticity, ownership, and professional standards in a culture increasingly driven by viral attention, artificial intelligence, and instant visibility. Talent can be digitally enhanced, creative work can be copied quickly, and many emerging artists are offered “exposure” instead of proper training, compensation, and career development. Access to affordable performance spaces and sustainable funding also remains a major obstacle for independent producers.
At the same time, this creates tremendous opportunity. Artists can now build independent platforms, reach audiences directly, own their stories, and create without waiting for traditional gatekeepers. There is also a growing need for programs that combine professional performance training with mental-health awareness, human development, mentorship, and business education. My opportunity is to bridge those areas preserving authentic hip-hop culture while developing disciplined, informed, well-rounded performers and creating spaces where original voices can be seen, heard, and properly supported.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect and integrity are the foundation of both my work and personal life. I value honesty, accountability, consistency, and the courage to remain authentic even when doing so is difficult. I believe respect is more meaningful than recognition because recognition can be temporary, while respect is earned through character, actions, and how you treat people.
Discipline, Dedication, and Determination guide how I approach every responsibility. I also value healthy boundaries, peace, self-respect, and loyalty that is mutual rather than expected. My work must have purpose beyond personal success; it should create opportunities, strengthen communities, and help others recognize their own value. Whether I am producing, teaching, mentoring, writing, or building a business, I want my actions and results to reflect the same principles I encourage others to live by.

Would You Rather Be Expected or Respected?
For years, I have asked the people I mentor one important question:
Would you rather be expected or respected?
Expectations are often based on what other people want from us. Respect is earned through character, boundaries, consistency, and how we conduct ourselves when no one is applauding.
After more than 30 years in entertainment, entrepreneurship, choreography, production, education, and mentorship, I have learned that recognition can introduce your name, but respect gives that name longevity.
The Pressure to Explain
Women are often expected to explain every decision we make.
We explain why we are qualified. We explain why we said no. We explain why we changed direction, protected our peace, left an unhealthy situation, raised our standards, or decided to begin again.
Sometimes, we explain ourselves so much that we unintentionally invite other people to debate decisions that were never theirs to make.
There is a difference between communicating clearly and constantly defending your right to choose what is best for your life.
You can provide information without surrendering your boundaries. You can be compassionate without making yourself available for disrespect. You can hear another person's opinion without giving that person authority over your purpose.
That understanding inspired one of my books, Stop Explaining Yourself. The message is not about refusing accountability. Accountability matters. It is about recognizing when an explanation is necessary and when it has become an attempt to receive permission, approval, or acceptance.
Recognition Is Not the Same as Respect
Recognition can be exciting. It can come through a title, award, feature, television appearance, sold-out production, viral moment, or invitation into an influential room.
But recognition can also be temporary.
Respect is built differently. It is created through preparation, professionalism, integrity, reliability, and the quality of your work. It is reflected in how you treat people, how you respond under pressure, and whether your private actions align with your public message.
My career has taken me from television and live performance to producing shows, training dancers, mentoring artists, speaking publicly, writing books, and developing programs that connect performance training with mental health awareness, human development, discipline, and self-respect.
Throughout that journey, I have experienced both open doors and closed ones. I have been celebrated, overlooked, underestimated, and presented with opportunities that would have required me to compromise who I was.
I learned that every open door is not necessarily your door.
An opportunity that demands your silence, dignity, identity, or integrity may cost more than it gives. Sometimes the strongest career decision is walking away. Other times, it is building your own platform and creating the opportunity you were repeatedly denied.
Boundaries Protect Purpose
A boundary is not a punishment. It is a clear statement about what you will and will not accept.
Women are sometimes called difficult when we are direct, intimidating when we are experienced, or selfish when we protect our time. Yet healthy boundaries allow us to preserve the energy required to lead, create, heal, and serve others.
You do not have to make yourself smaller so someone else can feel larger. You do not have to apologize for standards developed through experience. You do not have to keep giving access to people who repeatedly mishandle it.
"No" is a complete decision, even when you choose to offer an explanation.
Protecting your purpose also means learning the business behind your talent. Read agreements. Ask questions. Understand ownership. Protect your intellectual property. Know the value of your time, image, voice, and creative work.
Attention is not payment, and exposure is not always opportunity.
The Three D's
Since 1997, my work has been guided by three principles: Discipline, Dedication, and Determination.
Discipline keeps you working when motivation changes.
Dedication keeps you connected to the purpose behind the work.
Determination keeps you moving when disappointment, rejection, loss, or the need to rebuild makes the journey difficult.
These principles do not guarantee an easy path. They create the foundation required to remain standing when the path becomes hard.
Success is not only what happens when everything goes according to plan. Sometimes success is rebuilding without allowing bitterness to become your identity. Sometimes it is beginning again with greater wisdom, stronger boundaries, and a clearer understanding of what you will never accept again.
Give Yourself Permission
To every woman who feels pressured to justify her existence, ambition, or decisions: Give yourself permission to trust what your experiences have taught you.
You can change your mind. You can leave the table. You can build your own table. You can rest without quitting. You can rebuild without being ashamed of what was lost. You can protect your peace without explaining it to people committed to misunderstanding you.
Let your work speak. Let your integrity remain consistent. Let your boundaries protect what you are building.
Recognition may place your name in a room, but respect determines what that name represents after you leave.
Stop explaining yourself to people who have already decided not to understand you. Stand firmly in your truth, continue developing your craft, and allow your Discipline, Dedication, and Determination to produce results.
I do not believe in teaching people to fit one mold. My mission is to Teach to Each, meeting people where they are, recognizing the individual behind the talent, and giving them the tools to grow into who they were always intended to become.
