Her Story
About Dr. Carly
I have been working in healthcare for 17 years, and my journey into this field was deeply personal. Growing up in a big family and seeing my father sick as a child encouraged me to seek a helping profession so that I could help other people who are going through health issues. Currently, I do research, education, student engagements, workshops, and consulting. My typical day really depends - some days I'm doing consulting work with a lot of calls and meetings, some days I'm teaching and doing classes, some days I'm doing research, and other days I'm presenting or doing speaking engagements. It's just really different every day. I believe strongly in compassionate care, integrity, and honesty - no cutting corners. I honestly believe that trying to do the right thing and being a good person is the foundation for anything we do. I'm passionate about supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and who will truly advocate for the patient, advocate for themselves, and deliver quality care and compassionate care.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr. Carly
01What do you attribute your success to?
God and prayer. There were long nights spent praying for better days. Going from poverty and hunger to where I am now I can only give God credit for that.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what you love and what you’re naturally good at!
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think that healthcare really is on the cusp of change, and I think that we need nurses who are not afraid to challenge the status quo, and who will be able to stand up and truly advocate for the patient, advocate for themselves, and to deliver quality care and compassionate care.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges I see in healthcare are poor staffing and poor leadership. Some politics and old administrations and leadership styles are not really helpful or beneficial for the current climate and the things that we're seeing, whether it's in patient care or education. We need leadership that can be more supportive and not punitive. On the opportunity side, I think that healthcare really is on the cusp of change, and we need nurses who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and who will truly advocate for the patient and themselves while delivering quality care and compassionate care.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Definitely, I feel that people should be compassionate in the type of care that they give. Also have integrity, be honest, you know? No cutting corners, and just making sure you do the right thing. I honestly believe that trying to do the right thing and being a good person is the foundation for anything we do.
