About Carrie
Carrie Welsek is an accomplished hospitality and food service professional with more than 42 years of experience in catering, dining operations, and hospitality management. Currently serving as Director of Catering at Benedictine College through Aladdin Campus Dining, Carrie has built a career rooted in operational excellence, customer service, and team leadership. Beginning her journey at just 14 years old in a neighborhood pizzeria, she developed her expertise through hands-on experience, embracing what she proudly refers to as the "School of Hard Knocks." Throughout her career, Carrie has earned a reputation for delivering exceptional service, fostering strong teams, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
Over the years, Carrie has held leadership positions with respected organizations including Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services, Compass Group, Ginger Sue's, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her experience spans catering management, retail dining, beverage operations, restaurant leadership, and large-scale event planning. She has contributed to high-profile events such as the Kennedy Center Honors and Irish Fest, served distinguished guests including every living U.S. president and two vice presidents during her tenure at West Point Military Academy, and successfully managed complex hospitality operations requiring strategic planning, staff development, and meticulous attention to detail. Her ability to oversee diverse food service environments has made her a respected leader in collegiate dining and hospitality management.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Carrie is recognized for her resilience, integrity, and dedication to serving others. A two-time cancer survivor, she continued working throughout treatment while maintaining a positive outlook and unwavering commitment to her responsibilities. She also volunteers with the National MS Society, supporting community events through food and beverage coordination. Carrie attributes her success to determination, perseverance, and a strong work ethic, believing that every job reflects one's personal reputation. She encourages aspiring hospitality professionals to learn from experienced mentors, lead by example, and never ask others to perform tasks they would not be willing to do themselves.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to determination, perseverance, and a commitment to always doing my best. I believe in staying focused on my goals, overcoming challenges without giving up, and consistently putting forth my best effort in everything I do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never ask someone to do something that I wouldn’t be willing to do myself. Leading by example builds trust, earns respect, and demonstrates integrity. I believe that being willing to take on the same challenges and responsibilities as those around me creates a stronger, more collaborative team.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to listen, stay open to learning, and seek guidance from people who have been doing this work for a long time. Their experience can provide valuable insights, help you avoid common mistakes, and accelerate your professional growth. At the same time, be willing to apply what you learn, work hard, and build your own path with confidence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is finding and retaining the right people. Building a strong, skilled workforce is essential to long-term success, and attracting individuals who are the right fit can be difficult. At the same time, there are many opportunities for growth and innovation for organizations that invest in developing talented teams and adapting to changing market needs.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are pride, integrity, and accountability. I believe that my work reflects my name and reputation, so I always strive to do it to the highest standard. Taking pride in what I do, standing behind my work, and maintaining a strong sense of responsibility are principles that guide every decision I make.
