Her Story

About Christine

I started my career being hired as a bilingual rep, and I didn't really have my sights set on being an interpreter at that time. I just knew that I had a skill set that could be very valuable in the workplace, so whenever I would apply, I would always put that I'm bilingual, and that stood out. There was no lack of work, thankfully, because of that skill set. In that work, I learned that there was a great need, because people were trying to do their job, company owners, whether they were larger or smaller companies, and there were language barriers. So they ended up hiring bilingual representatives like myself, and I wanted to maximize the impact. The vision for having my agency was a way to create a hub for the primary languages of a community. It started off as a local community type of need, but I've been able to branch outside of my local community. The vision was to be able to become a resource for people who are trying to serve, and they're encountering a language barrier of any kind. In order to do their work, or in order to gain clients, they're able to eliminate that language barrier because they would have hired us to assist, whether that's translating documents, whether that's providing lessons to the staff, or whether that's being on site and interpreting for trainings, which I've done several times. I've had medical clients, I've had school clients, clients in education, corporate clients. In some ways, we serve by translating documents. In other ways we've served by being on-site to interpret for meetings and trainings. And in other areas, we've provided lessons at the corporate level, and individual lessons as well. I became nationally certified as a Spanish interpreter in 2024, which I'm very proud of, especially since I'm not a native speaker of Spanish. It's not an easy test, and it's not a cheap test, and everything was on my dime, and all the studying was up to me.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Definitely start attending events and conferences that are related to becoming an interpreter, because it's still a very niche market. It's a broad field, but we still need more, and I want to gain awareness, and what helped me really branch out was by attending conferences. It's a really quick way to expand your network with like-minded individuals. Without you starting from scratch, having to explain to people what you want to do, just by attending and supporting these related events and conferences, you're in the room with people who already understand where you're coming from, because they're in the same boat.
