Her Story
About Chyanne
I'm currently in my first HR role, and I don't come from an HR background. Before this, I was at UNCG doing administrative assistant work, but even before that, I was in retail since I was 16. After I graduated college, I was in a supervisory position for maybe like a year or two, then the store I was working at ended up closing, so I just decided to pivot to something more in an office space. I didn't really love the mundane of admin work and not really seeing people a lot, so I looked for another opportunity, which was supposed to be marketing here, but that didn't work out. They had another position open, and I come from a business administrative degree, so they were like, you know, you're interested in HR? I was like, sure. And it stuck, and I'm glad that that pivot happened, actually, because I think this is really the road for me. In my role, I handle anything HR - recruitment, onboarding, performance management, training, off-boarding, company events, employee development, stuff like that. Recently, my most proudest accomplishment has been creating an apprenticeship program through Apprenticeship NC for our maintenance tech role and securing a $55,000 training grant from the state for workforce development training, including leadership training, technical training, and safety training. My operations manager, Edward Forest, has really given me the leeway to take control of this role and make it what I envision it to be. The apprenticeship program and training grant funding wasn't something that was asked of me to do - it was just something that I came upon, and I told him about it, and he was like, if you see a need for this and this could benefit us, go ahead and go for it. And that's what I did.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would definitely say go for it. I do think it takes a certain person, for sure, but if you're passionate about helping people and seeing people grow, even listening to people, I think there's a spot for you. I never knew that I was gonna be interested in HR, honestly, but the more and more I'm here and I'm working, I see it, well, this definitely fits me, because I'm all for helping people, promoting a positive environment, and seeing people grow inside of work and outside as well.
