Her Story
About Courtney
Dr. Courtney A. Brown is an accomplished educator, academic leader, author, and entrepreneur based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whose career spans K-12 and higher education. She serves as Interim Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Assistant Professor at Southern University and A&M College, where she prepares future educators and bridges educational theory with practical classroom experience. After approximately 15 years teaching students from elementary through high school, she transitioned into higher education, drawing on her background in psychology, counseling, and social work to support student development and strengthen teacher preparation. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Louisiana State University and a master's degree in Ministerial Leadership from Amridge University. Her journey into education was shaped by her experiences following Hurricane Katrina, when she began assisting in her son's classroom, ultimately discovering a calling that led her to pursue a doctorate. As an entrepreneur and publishing advocate, Dr. Brown is the CEO of Project Narrative LLC, a publishing company established in 2024 following the rebranding of her earlier venture, Somebody's Answer. Through Project Narrative, she empowers individuals to share their stories and amplify their voices through writing workshops, anthologies, publishing guidance, and school-based initiatives that encourage children to become confident storytellers. A prolific author, she has self-published seven books spanning children's literature and inspirational writing, using her work to promote representation and to highlight the experiences of underrepresented communities. She also serves as Co-Director of the LSU Writing Project, supporting educators through professional development and effective writing curriculum. Her professional accomplishments include receiving the Association of Classroom Teachers Fellowship in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and being named an America Achieves Cohort Three Fellow in 2016. Through her academic leadership, research, and publishing initiatives, Dr. Brown remains committed to connecting theory with practice and creating opportunities for individuals to tell their stories authentically.
Beyond education and publishing, Dr. Brown is deeply devoted to faith, ministry, and community service. In 2019, she founded Beyond the Walls Outreach Ministries, a nonprofit organization dedicated to demonstrating the love of God through tangible acts of service, including scholarships, conferences, training, and community support. During the pandemic, the ministry expanded its reach through virtual programming and resources. Drawing inspiration from her family heritage, which includes grandfathers who served as pastors and parents who were ministers of music, she has served as a minister of music, associate minister, and Sunday School superintendent. Her work across education, entrepreneurship, and ministry reflects a consistent commitment to empowering others, advocating for underserved communities, and ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds have opportunities to be heard, represented, and supported. Through her leadership and service, Dr. Brown continues to encourage others to recognize their potential, share their experiences, and pursue their purpose.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Courtney
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success first and foremost to my faith in God, my sense of purpose, and my willingness to remain open to opportunities beyond what I originally imagined for myself. My journey began in counseling and social services before taking an unexpected turn into education. What started as an opportunity to assist in my son's classroom following Hurricane Katrina became a calling that shaped more than two decades of my professional life. This experience taught me that opportunities do not always come in the form we expect, and sometimes the smallest steps reveal our greatest purpose. I also credit my persistence, commitment to lifelong learning, and courage to overcome challenges, including the demands of completing my doctoral studies while balancing other responsibilities. My education strengthened my ability to advocate for students, educators, and underrepresented communities whose voices deserve to be heard. Ultimately, I measure success by the impact I make on others rather than by personal achievements alone. Through Project Narrative LLC, I help people share their stories; through Beyond the Walls Outreach Ministries, I put my faith into action; and through higher education, I prepare future teachers to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their students. For me, true success means using the gifts, knowledge, and opportunities God has given me to serve others, create opportunities, and empower people to recognize their potential and pursue their purpose.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have learned is to never allow my environment to dictate my identity or determine the limits of my potential. Throughout my career, I have worked in spaces where women and minorities have not always been adequately represented in leadership and decision-making, which has taught me the importance of staying grounded in my purpose and believing in the value of my contributions. My journey from social services to K-12 education, higher education, publishing, and ministry has shown me that growth often comes from being willing to embrace unexpected opportunities and remain open to learning. I encourage others to look beyond their current circumstances, recognize their gifts, and trust that their abilities can create opportunities they may not yet envision. I have also learned that serving others requires intentional care for myself, because lasting success depends on maintaining a healthy balance between giving and replenishing my own strength. Ultimately, my advice is to remain faithful to your values, be willing to evolve, and never let the limitations of your surroundings define who you can become.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering education, publishing, or leadership is to make sure your purpose is bigger than a paycheck, a title, or the comfort of a predictable career path. Be clear about what matters to you, invest in your education, develop your voice, and remain open to opportunities beyond your original plans. Never allow someone else’s expectations or the limitations of your environment to determine your potential. Have the courage to enter rooms where your perspective may be underrepresented and recognize that your experiences and insights have value. At the same time, understand that success should not come at the expense of your well-being or the relationships and values that matter most to you. Set boundaries, make room for joy, and remember that rest is an essential part of sustainable growth, not something you must earn through exhaustion. Most importantly, stay connected to your purpose and use what you learn along the way to create opportunities for other women. True success is not only about how far you go, but also about how you use your journey to empower others.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in education and literacy today is ensuring that students from underrepresented communities feel seen, heard, and supported, with access to meaningful opportunities to succeed. We must continue to address gaps in representation and ensure that educational practices reflect the diverse experiences and realities of the students we serve. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities in innovative curriculum development, storytelling, and preparing future teachers to connect classroom learning with students’ lived experiences. Through my work in higher education, publishing, and ministry, I believe we can turn knowledge into meaningful action by empowering individuals to share their stories, strengthening educators’ ability to serve diverse learners, and creating opportunities for communities to thrive. Ultimately, I believe our greatest opportunity is to make education more inclusive and purposeful, ensuring that every individual has the chance to recognize their potential and that every story has the opportunity to be heard.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are faith, service, integrity, compassion, and purpose. My faith guides my decisions and reminds me that love must be demonstrated through meaningful action, whether I am supporting students, helping authors share their stories, preparing future educators, or providing resources to communities through Beyond the Walls Outreach Ministries. I believe in treating people with compassion, leading with integrity, and using my knowledge and abilities to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I also value continuous personal growth, intentional rest, and meaningful relationships because I understand that serving others effectively requires taking care of myself as well. For me, success is not defined solely by titles, recognition, or accomplishments, but by the impact I make and the opportunities I help create for others. Ultimately, I strive to live a life in which my faith aligns with my actions, my work reflects my purpose, and the gifts I have been given are used to empower others and strengthen the communities I serve.
