I don't believe home care lies solely on the woman. I've always worked two jobs while raising our kids. Women are just as capable, and holding this dual role has been challenging and rewarding.

About Danette

Danette Akana is a behavioral health professional specializing in forensic psychology, substance abuse counseling, and trauma-informed care. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Danette currently works as a Behavioral Consultant with Jessica Foerch LLC and as an Inpatient Clinical Therapist and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) with CrossRoads of Southern Nevada. Her professional focus centers on supporting individuals within behavioral health and correctional populations, with a particular interest in helping justice-involved youth address trauma, substance use, and barriers to successful rehabilitation. Danette’s career journey began with her studies in criminal justice, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration with a concentration in management from the University of Phoenix in 2016. She later transitioned her focus toward understanding the psychological and behavioral factors influencing criminal activity by earning a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from Argosy University. Danette is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology at Walden University, where her research examines trauma-informed residential treatment approaches and their impact on reducing substance use and recidivism among justice-involved youth. Danette is passionate about creating positive change through compassionate, evidence-based care and hopes to establish a rehabilitation program for at-risk youth focused on addressing childhood trauma and reducing recidivism and criminal behavior. She values honesty, hard work, empathy, and selflessness, which guide her approach to both her personal and professional life. Through her clinical practice, research, and advocacy efforts, Danette continues to contribute to the advancement of behavioral health and forensic psychology.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Danette

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the values my parents instilled in me, especially my father’s lessons on honesty, hard work, and staying true to my own journey. Their lessons have laid the foundation for my guiding principles today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to pursue what I believe in with full commitment, give it my all, and trust the plan I’ve created. Staying focused, moving forward with confidence, and the never ending quest for self-improvement have been key to my growth and success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to trust yourself, stay grounded in strong values, and listen more than you speak. Be open to different perspectives, recognize that everyone comes from a different background, and adapt while staying true to who you are and the values that guide you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in my field include navigating legal requirements, certifications, and professional boards, as one degree or credential is often not enough to continue practicing and advancing. Another challenge is the focus on appearances rather than authenticity; success comes from staying true to yourself, your values, and your purpose.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are kindness, understanding, empathy, compassion, selflessness, honesty, and hard work. These principles guide how I treat others, make decisions, and approach every opportunity.
