Building Her Own Path: Dannielle Haley's Journey Through the Construction Industry

When I entered the construction industry in 2019, I didn't know exactly where the road would lead. I only knew I was willing to learn, work hard, and prove that I belonged.

I began my career at AE Engineering in dispatch. Within a few months, I advanced to training coordinator and later began preparing for the construction services manager role. Each new opportunity taught me more about the industry and helped me discover strengths I didn't yet realize I possessed.

From there, I gained experience in the asphalt industry before joining East Coast Site & Utilities, where I served as operations manager for two years. Managing daily operations in the underground utility field strengthened my skills in project management, quality control, problem-solving, and leadership. Today, I work as an outside sales representative for AA Precast Products, Inc., a family-owned company that has served Northeast Florida for more than 30 years.

My career has allowed me to experience many aspects of construction—from dispatch and training to operations, quality control, and sales. That breadth of experience has given me a deeper appreciation for how every person and every department contributes to a project's success.

Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry

Working in construction as a woman has not always been easy. There have been times when I felt I had to work harder to establish credibility and demonstrate that I was just as capable as my male colleagues.

Rather than allowing those challenges to discourage me, I used them as motivation. Being told I couldn't do something only strengthened my determination to prove that I could.

Over time, I learned that confidence doesn't come from knowing everything. It comes from being willing to ask questions, listen to those with experience, and continue learning. I have never been afraid to start at the bottom, take on unfamiliar responsibilities, or admit when I need more information. Every position I have held has prepared me for the next.

I have also learned the importance of speaking up. Women in construction sometimes feel pressure to remain quiet until they are completely certain of themselves. But our ideas, observations, and experiences matter. Finding the confidence to contribute—and standing behind those contributions—can change both how others see us and how we see ourselves.

Earning Respect Through Knowledge and Consistency

In construction, respect is not earned through a job title alone. It is earned by being dependable, following through on commitments, and understanding the work.

Throughout my career, I have continued expanding my technical knowledge and professional qualifications. I hold Level 2 certifications in asphalt plant operations, along with OSHA 30, Hazmat, Radiation Safety Officer, and Quality Control Manager certifications.

These accomplishments represent more than credentials. They reflect the time, dedication, and effort I have invested in understanding my industry. Developing technical expertise has allowed me to communicate more effectively, make informed decisions, and build trust with coworkers, contractors, and customers.

I also believe consistency matters just as much as knowledge. People remember whether you return their calls, keep your promises, acknowledge your mistakes, and follow through on your commitments. Those everyday actions are what build lasting professional relationships.

The Power of Relationships

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that construction is built on relationships just as much as it is built on plans, materials, and equipment.

I encourage women entering the industry to introduce themselves, attend industry events, and never be afraid to start a conversation. A simple introduction can lead to a valuable connection, a mentor, a new opportunity, or even a lifelong professional relationship.

My involvement with organizations such as the Florida Transportation Builders' Association has helped me continue building those connections. I also volunteer through my VFW Riders group, participating in fundraising efforts that support veterans and individuals affected by cancer.

Giving back to my community keeps me grounded and reminds me that success isn't measured only by what we accomplish professionally, but also by how we use our opportunities to serve others.

Building a Future for Women in Construction

Women bring valuable skills, perspectives, and leadership to the construction industry. We are project managers, operators, inspectors, engineers, sales professionals, business owners, and executives. We belong in the field, in the office, and at the decision-making table.

My advice to women considering a career in construction is simple: Don't let fear—or other people's expectations—determine what you are capable of accomplishing.

Be willing to learn.

Ask questions.

Earn certifications.

Build relationships.

Speak with confidence.

Never underestimate the value you bring to a team.

I am grateful for the family members, mentors, and industry professionals who supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. At the same time, I am proud to acknowledge that I brought myself this far. I accepted the challenges, put in the work, and kept moving forward, even when the path was uncertain.

My journey through construction is still being built. Every position, every challenge, and every relationship has added another layer to its foundation. If my experience encourages even one woman to believe in herself and pursue a career in this industry, then sharing my story will have been worthwhile.

Construction has taught me that the strongest foundations are built through preparation, persistence, and confidence—and those same qualities have helped me build a career of my own.
