Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dannilla
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, hard work, relentless authenticity, and a deep commitment to continuous growth with a willingness to embrace new opportunities. After coming to the United States as an au pair, I researched high-demand careers and chose medical coding because it aligned with my goals for long-term growth. I balanced work while studying through Penn Foster, remained committed despite a few attempts at the certification exam, and earned my certification in 2021. That determination has allowed me to advance into risk adjustment coding roles with organizations such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and continues to motivate me as I grow in my career. I’ve approached my work with a genuine desire to serve others, whether that’s ensuring patient health data accurately reflects the care provided or empowering fellow professionals across the industry. What you see is what you get with me: I lead with transparency and empathy. Whether serving as President of the AAPC Carmel NY Chapter, mentoring coders, or pursuing advanced HIM studies, I don't see my career as just transactional data review. I see it as building meaningful connections, elevating documentation integrity, and helping others realize their potential.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to never give up, no matter how difficult the journey may seem. I experienced that lesson firsthand when I had to take my certification exam multiple times before passing. That experience taught me that setbacks are not failures, they are opportunities to learn, improve, and keep moving forward until I achieve my goals. Stand firmly in your truth and lead with integrity; not everyone will always agree with you, and that’s okay. In healthcare compliance and risk adjustment, standing in your truth means holding fast to ethical standards, proper ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, and complete documentation integrity regardless of external pressures. It also means believing in your own capacity for growth. This mindset drove me to continuously raise my personal benchmarks, balancing full-time professional coding with earning a 4.0 GPA throughout most terms in Health Information Management at SNHU and taking on leadership roles within the AAPC community.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to believe in yourself and never let temporary setbacks define your future. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and persistence is one of the most valuable qualities you can have. I had to retake my certification exam several times before succeeding, and that experience taught me that determination and resilience will take you farther than perfection. If you stay focused and committed, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Focus on being your authentic self, because authenticity builds the strongest and most meaningful professional relationships. In technical fields like Health Information Management and Risk Adjustment, it’s easy to get caught up solely in metrics, certifications, or production quotas. But real, long-term impact comes from connecting with purpose, finding strong mentors, and intentionally designing your career path. I encourage young women to get involved in local professional chapters like the AAPC early, seek out mentors, and never hesitate to step into leadership. When you align your work with your deeper purpose, success, professional recognition, and personal fulfillment become natural outcomes.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
While the industry is undergoing a major shift toward automated coding platforms and NLP tools, the reality on the ground is that AI is far from fully functional in complex chart review. When AI platforms misinterpret clinical context, suggest false-positive HCCs, or incorrectly split encounters, it actually creates more rework for coders. Coders end up spending extra time auditing, overriding, and fixing AI outputs rather than being supported by them. One of my biggest professional challenges right now is continuing to excel as I transition into a new role, where I have been for only two months. I am focused on maintaining high-quality standards while meeting productivity goals and continuing to expand my knowledge. I see this as an opportunity to strengthen my skills, build confidence, and establish a strong foundation for long-term career growth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most are hard work, dedication, perseverance, and service to others. I believe in giving my best effort, continuing to learn, and never giving up when faced with challenges. I am also passionate about mentoring others in my community and helping them pursue their own goals. Above all, I value maintaining a healthy balance between my career and my roles as a wife and mother, ensuring that I can succeed professionally while being fully present for my family. Integrity, continuous incremental growth, and community empowerment. The most important value in my work and personal life is doing the right thing and having integrity in everything I do, so I can end each day with peace of mind knowing I gave my absolute best. I also strongly believe in striving to be 1% better every day. Small, consistent improvements, whether in coding accuracy, leadership development, or academic studies, add up over time to create lasting, meaningful impact. Combining that personal growth with uplifting my professional community is what keeps me inspired every day.
