Ten minutes with Demetria
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a commitment to serving others, continuous learning, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed. Throughout my career, I have embraced every opportunity to grow, adapt, and improve while building meaningful relationships based on trust, empathy, and respect. I believe every student deserves personalized support, and staying dedicated to their success while continually developing my own skills has been the foundation of my professional growth.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is that my future is defined not by where I come from, but by the choices I make and the effort I'm willing to invest. My late grandmother taught me that meaningful success comes through perseverance, discipline, and hard work, while my mother showed me the power of resilience and determination through her example. Those lessons, along with the unwavering support and encouragement of my late husband, have shaped how I approach both my career and life—with courage, compassion, and the belief that every challenge is an opportunity to grow.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to never let someone else's perception of your potential define your future. Keep learning, seek out mentors, embrace every opportunity to grow, and don't be afraid to challenge expectations. Be proactive, stay curious, share your ideas and believe in your abilities—even if you don't meet every qualification on paper. With perseverance, preparation, and confidence, you can create opportunities for yourself and achieve more than others may think is possible.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I believe one of the biggest opportunities in higher education is creating a more personalized, proactive, and student-centered advising experience. As students' needs become more diverse, advisors must go beyond traditional processes by building meaningful relationships, improving systems, and connecting students with the right resources at the right time. By combining operational excellence with genuine human connection, we can help students feel supported, confident, and better equipped to achieve their goals. Another challenge

I believe in treating everyone with respect and empathy while building meaningful relationships based on trust. I also value perseverance and personal responsibility, always striving to grow, improve processes, and support others in reaching their full potential. Whether in my work or personal life, I want people to feel heard, supported, and empowered.
