Her Story
About Dr. Sheila
Authenticity has the power to change how we see ourselves, how we lead, and how we show up in the world. That belief has been a defining thread throughout a career spanning more than three decades in education, leadership, writing, and service.
As an educator, author, speaker, and entrepreneur, Dr. Sheila M. Wilson is passionate about helping others recognize their value, trust their voice, and resist the pressure to shrink or conform. Her work is grounded in self-awareness, empathy, and the belief that we should have the freedom to define ourselves rather than live according to the assumptions of others.
These experiences inspired her book, Fix Ya Face: Why First Impressions Lie and How Black Women Can Control Their Own Story, and continue to shape her work through AmplifyED Educational Consulting.
Whether teaching, mentoring doctoral students, writing, or speaking, she encourages others to grow without losing themselves and to confidently own their stories.
Authenticity over approval.

Ten minutes with Dr. Sheila
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to faith, perseverance, and a willingness to remain authentic even when it would have been easier to conform. Over more than three decades in education and leadership, I’ve learned that success is not simply about accomplishments. It’s about continuing to grow, remaining open to new possibilities, and using what I’ve learned to help others. I also credit the people who have supported, challenged, and encouraged me along the way. Most importantly, I’ve learned to trust my own voice and recognize that I don’t have to shrink who I am to make others comfortable.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I’d actually like to share the worst career advice I’ve ever received: “Fake it till you make it.” I understand the intention behind it, but I’ve come to believe that we shouldn’t have to fake who we are in order to succeed. Growth may require us to stretch beyond our comfort zones, but it shouldn’t require us to perform a version of ourselves that isn’t authentic. I’d rather say, “Grow as you go.” You don’t have to have all the answers. You can learn, evolve, and become while still being authentically you.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering education and leadership is simple: don’t shrink to fit into spaces you were meant to impact. Learn your craft, remain teachable, and give yourself permission to grow without pretending to have everything figured out. Your voice, experiences, and perspective have value. You can evolve professionally without abandoning who you are personally. Choose authenticity over approval, and never confuse fitting in with belonging.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges, and opportunities, in education right now is learning how to embrace change without losing the human connection at the heart of teaching and learning. Technology, particularly AI, is transforming how we teach, learn, and lead. The opportunity is to use these tools intentionally while continuing to value relationships, critical thinking, creativity, and the unique perspectives people bring to the table. Innovation should enhance who we are, not replace what makes us human.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are ethics, fairness, and kindness. I believe how we treat people matters just as much as what we accomplish. Ethics keeps me grounded in doing what is right, fairness reminds me to consider the experiences and perspectives of others, and kindness allows me to lead with humanity. Whether I’m teaching, leading, writing, or simply moving through life, I want people to know that I treated them with dignity and respect.
