Her Story
About Eleanor
I am currently the construction manager and resident engineer for what I would say is the most important underground project in New York - the Hudson Tunnel, the Hudson River Tunnel. The project is divided into four packages, and I oversee the first package, which is located in New Jersey. This construction involves two tunnels under the Hudson River, and I'm working on the New Jersey side, which is the first two tunnels that are going to be built. This is going to be mechanized tunneling, which is my expertise. They are going to be built with two TBMs, two tunnel boring machines, and they're going to go from North Bergen to Hoboken. That's the first package. The second package will actually be the tunnel that goes right under the river, and it will end up in Penn Station. I studied in Europe, where I did two masters - one in geotechnics and underground structures, and another master's in tunneling. After those, I went straight into the industry. I've been in the United States for the last five years.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God in first place. I have peace of mind because I believe there is a higher power somewhere that is helping me. And then, my parents, definitely. My mother was very strong with me, in the sense that she definitely put the seed in me that I was able to achieve what I was planning. And then my father is an engineer, so he was definitely showing me the way.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just follow up your goals. It'll be a bit harder for us being women - I live it every day. Because this industry is male-dominated, which is sometimes very frustrating. But I would say pursue your goal, and you'll get it.
