Her Story

About Emma

Emma Cain is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Lead Mental Health Clinician at The University of Texas Medical Branch, where she specializes in correctional managed care within the Galveston County Jail system. Raised in the Houston area, Emma's professional journey began with a passion for psychology before evolving into social work after discovering the profound impact of working directly with individuals in need. Dedicated to bridging the gap between the justice system and mental health services, she has built a career focused on providing compassionate, trauma-informed care to underserved populations. Her rapid advancement from mental health clinician to lead clinician reflects both her clinical expertise and commitment to improving behavioral health outcomes in correctional settings.

Emma earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M University before completing her Master of Social Work at Fordham University. She credits her education with shaping her ethical foundation, expanding her professional perspective, and helping her discover her passion for correctional managed care. Throughout her career, she has gained experience in community mental health, medical social work, case management, and crisis intervention, while also serving as a therapy intern, facilitating group therapy, coordinating referrals, and advocating for individuals navigating complex mental health and legal systems. Emma is also an active member of the National Association of Social Workers and contributes to initiatives such as the Texas After Jail Project.

Grounded in the values of equality, respect, and transparency, Emma is passionate about empowering individuals and ensuring they receive the support and resources they deserve. She attributes much of her success to the encouragement of her family—particularly her mother, who instilled the importance of education and perseverance—and to mentors who helped shape her professional path. Outside of work, Emma enjoys crafting, crocheting, sewing, music, and spending time with animals. Looking ahead, she remains committed to advancing trauma-informed care, strengthening connections between mental health and the justice system, and inspiring others entering the social work profession to embrace new opportunities with confidence and grace.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Emma

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success, above all, to my mom. Her unwavering support, guidance, and the values she instilled in me have shaped who I am and motivated me to work hard, persevere through challenges, and strive to achieve my goals.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to avoid putting yourself in a box and to give yourself grace. Success takes time, and it's okay not to have everything figured out right away. Stay open to new opportunities, keep learning, and trust that your passion and success will come with experience.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is addressing homelessness among the population we serve, as it significantly impacts access to care and long-term outcomes. Other ongoing challenges include navigating changing federal policies and supporting medication compliance, all of which require consistent collaboration and a patient-centered approach.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are equality, respect, and transparency. I believe treating everyone fairly, fostering mutual respect, and communicating openly are essential to building trust, meaningful relationships, and positive outcomes.
