Ten minutes with Erika
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, purpose, and a willingness to keep growing. Challenges have taught me to adapt, remain committed to my goals, and continue moving forward even when the path isn't easy. I've also learned that success isn't just about what you accomplish; it's about what you do with the opportunities you've been given to help others succeed.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is, “You're exactly where you're supposed to be.” That reminder has taught me to trust the journey, learn from every season, and recognize that even unexpected experiences can prepare us for opportunities we haven't imagined yet.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Protect your well-being as fiercely as you protect your patients. Nursing will teach you to care deeply for others, but you cannot continually pour from yourself without replenishing what you give. Build healthy boundaries, find mentors, ask for help, and never confuse exhaustion with dedication. Your compassion is one of your greatest superpowers. Protect it!
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of healthcare's greatest challenges and opportunities is creating environments where nurses can thrive, not simply survive. Burnout, workforce instability, increasing patient complexity, and rapid technological change require us to rethink how we prepare and support nurses. I believe the future lies in combining innovation with human connection: investing in mentorship, psychological safety, leadership development, well-being, and technology while preserving the compassion at the heart of nursing.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, compassion, accountability, perseverance, and service guide both my professional and personal life. I believe leadership begins with how we treat people, particularly when no one is watching. I value creating environments where people feel seen, respected, supported, and empowered to grow. Above all, I believe success carries a responsibility to create opportunities for others.
