Ten minutes with Erika

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to expect at least 10 “no’s” before receiving a “yes.” That perspective taught me to develop resilience, keep knocking on doors, and never give up when faced with rejection or setbacks. Even on difficult days, I remind myself to maintain a winning mindset, stay positive, and focus on helping at least one person each day. Challenges may knock me down, but I believe success comes from having the determination to get back up, keep moving forward, and do so with a smile.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to dress for the position you want, not simply the position you currently hold. Present yourself with confidence, professionalism, and purpose. Walk into every room with confidence, offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and let your presence and voice be heard. First impressions matter, and how you present yourself can influence how others perceive your professionalism and capabilities. Most importantly, believe in yourself, speak with confidence, and never be afraid to show others what you bring to the table.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is wanting to be everywhere for everyone in person. Representing SCAN Health Plan in Bexar County while managing a network of more than 1,000 brokers. I cannot be everywhere at once, so one of my greatest opportunities is learning how to multiply my impact through effective communication, collaboration, training, and strong relationships. My goal is to build systems and empower others so I can extend my reach, support more brokers, and continue providing the level of service and leadership they deserve.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my professional and personal life are professionalism, commitment, reliability, and integrity. When I give my word or make a commitment, I follow through and make sure I am there when I say I will be. I believe in giving 110% every day, regardless of whether I am having a good day or facing challenges. I take pride in being dependable, honoring my commitments, and always giving my best effort in everything I do.
