Her Story
About Florence
I started my healthcare career in 2005 at Springdale Health Care Center, a long-term care facility in Camden, beginning as a CNA. Over the years, I worked my way up through various positions - from CNA to activity assistant, then rehab tech, work clerk, and business office assistant. In 2017, I was offered the Human Resource Director position. I actually turned it down three times at first because I was the backup to HR and understood the day-to-day complaints and issues employees had, so I was concerned. But I've always been the type of person that wants to resolve issues or concerns - what they call a peacemaker. After the third offer, I decided to take it, and I excelled in it. Now it's something I really like doing. I'm known for my relationships with my employees - they trust me. Previous places I've worked, they used to send me to other facilities to train new HR directors, and when I walk in there, they're happy to see me. I guess it's just my personality and how I treat people. I'm always available for my staff. My day-to-day responsibilities include employee relations, recruitment, retention, employee engagement, and payroll. You go to work in the morning with plans for the day, but it never always happens that way - there's always something that comes up, especially when it comes to employee concerns.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to setting goals for myself and always achieving them. Whatever goals I set for myself, I achieve it. I do my very best to achieve it, which I always do. That's what I focus on - making sure that I accomplish what I set out to do.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give would be that as an HR director, for you to be successful, you have to always be available for your staff. You need to have empathy and understand what they're going through. It cannot be all business, because they're still human, and we have to understand where they're coming from. Trust is the main thing to have that good relationship between you and your staff. They have to be able to trust you as their human resource director, as their advocate, as someone that's gonna understand and help them with whatever concerns they may have.
