Her Story
About Fredricka
Fredricka Holland-Guy, LSW, is a retired social worker based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose career was dedicated to helping children and families. She found deep fulfillment in the solutions she helped create for individuals and families, while also recognizing persistent challenges within social work practice, including inadequate training and leadership. Her commitment to improving practice led her to seek ways to influence how services were delivered and how professionals could better serve those in need.
Drawing from her professional experiences, Fredricka has completed a book titled My Grandmother Taught Me Not to Argue with Fools, which explores the difference between what happened in practice and what should have happened. The book is not a memoir but instead focuses on lessons and observations from her years in social work, particularly issues affecting practice. She is currently working through the editing process with her coach and plans to publish the book, with the goal of contributing to meaningful conversations about improving the field.
Now retired, Fredricka describes herself as a housewife and focuses on her home life with her husband while helping raise and encourage her grandson. She attributes her success to a deep love and respect for humanity and a strong desire to see people treated fairly and receive what they deserve. She encourages young professionals to embrace social work as an honorable field, continue learning throughout their careers, maintain positive interests and support systems outside of work, and pursue leadership as an opportunity to advocate for people rather than personal gain. She also emphasizes the courage required to speak truth to power and has previously supported Habitat for Humanity through payroll contributions.

If you aspire to leadership, lead authentically and advocate for changes that help people. Leadership takes courage, integrity, and the willingness to speak truth to power, rather than simply pursuing financial gain.
