Her Story

About Gabriela

As an immigrant who learned English as a second language, I developed a profound love for literature and books that shaped my entire career path. Libraries became my favorite places on Earth, and books became my best friends growing up. Initially, I pursued psychology because I was fascinated by the human mind, but I was always drawn to literature, to being able to create screenplays, poetry, stories, and fiction. Following my mother's advice to follow my heart, I transitioned fully into writing and editing. My work evolved from creative fiction to nonfiction out of necessity, because I saw the great need to convey truth, especially regarding the safety and rights of immigrants. I have two nonfiction books ready for publication, three screenplays, and numerous fictional works including stories and poems that I need to publish. Currently, I am working with a survivor who was trafficked by her own family repeatedly as a child, helping to expose her story of trauma, abuse, and how she overcame it even as a child. I maintain a blog where I post Know Your Rights resources in both English and Spanish for immigrants to help them navigate the current situation in the United States. I am now seeking a literary agent for the first time as I prepare to bring these important works to publication.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from my mother, who told me to follow my heart. Initially, I had gone into psychology because that was a huge interest of mine, the human mind. But I had always been so drawn to literature, to books, to being able to create screenplays, poetry, stories, fiction, that I just kept getting drawn towards writing and editing. My mom was the one that convinced me to follow my heart, because she said, and I think she was quoting somebody else, if you are able to do what you love, you will never work another day in your life. So I took that to heart.
