Growing up, I thought success was supposed to look like a straight line. Pick the lane. Climb the ladder. Collect the title. Smile in the headshot. Try not to spill coffee on yourself before the important meeting.

That was not my path.

Mine looked more like a back road with a few detours, some sharp turns, and at least one moment where the GPS quietly gave up and said, "Allá tú, girl. Good luck!"

But I have learned that some of the most meaningful careers are not built in straight lines. They are built in layers. Every role, every pivot, every season of starting over teaches you something that becomes useful later, even if you cannot see it at the time.

Before the Classroom

Before becoming a teacher, and before my current work supporting schools and districts, I was a small business owner for more than 12 years. That chapter taught me how to build something from the ground up, solve problems quickly, serve people well, and keep going when the plan looked great on paper but fell apart by lunchtime.

More importantly, it gave me the opportunity to mentor young people facing barriers and provide on-the-job training for young adults with developmental disabilities. Many of those young adults went on to own and run their own businesses. That remains one of the things I am proudest of.

That experience taught me something I still carry with me: people do not just need encouragement. Encouragement matters, of course. We all need someone cheering from the sidelines, preferably with snacks. But encouragement alone is not enough. People need access. They need structure. They need coaching. They need someone willing to see their capacity before they fully see it themselves.

That lesson eventually pulled me into teaching.

Literacy Changes Access

In the classroom, I saw how literacy changes more than academic outcomes. Literacy changes access. It gives students a stronger voice, more confidence, and more choices. It helps them ask better questions, understand the world more deeply, and participate in conversations that shape their future.

That is especially powerful for students and communities who have had to navigate systems that were not always built with them in mind. Many women of color know this feeling well. You learn early how to translate between worlds. You learn how to read the room before you speak in it. You learn how to be excellent and likable, confident but not "too much," ambitious but still approachable.

That kind of fluency can be exhausting, but it can also become a strength. It teaches you to listen closely. It teaches you to notice what is unsaid. It teaches you how to build bridges between people, ideas, and systems.

The Same Work at a Different Level

Today, I work in education as an account manager, partnering with school and district leaders around literacy, instruction, intervention, and implementation. From the outside, that may sound like a major shift from business ownership or classroom teaching. To me, it feels like the same work at a different level.

I am still helping people move forward.

The scale has changed. The setting has changed. The meetings have more acronyms now, because education has never met a three-letter abbreviation it did not immediately adopt. But the purpose is the same: help people identify what they need, remove unnecessary barriers, and build a clearer path toward growth.

Schools are carrying a lot right now. Leaders are navigating literacy accountability, funding pressure, teacher capacity, multilingual learner growth, intervention needs, and community expectations. Teachers are being asked to do more with less time and more scrutiny. Students are walking into classrooms with brilliance, curiosity, and very real needs.

In that environment, my role is not simply to offer a solution. It is to help leaders slow down enough to name the real problem.

• What is getting in the way?
• What do teachers need to make this work?
• Where is the system creating confusion?
• What needs to become simpler, clearer, and more sustainable?

I believe one of the most underrated forms of leadership is translation. Translating pressure into priorities. Translating vision into action. Translating classroom realities into district conversations. Translating big goals into next steps people can actually take on a Tuesday morning when the copier is jammed and someone just announced an emergency fire drill.

My winding path has taught me that influence is not always about being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes influence is being the person who helps the room get clearer.

Do Not Wait for Your Path to Look Perfect

For young women entering education, sales, leadership, or any people-centered field, this is what I would say: do not wait for your path to look perfect before you trust it.

• The job that felt unrelated may have taught you how to read people.
• The season when you had to start over may have taught you resilience.
• The role where you felt underestimated may have taught you how to advocate with precision.
• The community you come from may have given you insight no training manual could ever touch.

Your experience is not a random collection of chapters. It is data. Use it.

And for women of color, especially, I would add this: you do not have to shrink your story to make other people comfortable. You can be warm and direct. Strategic and compassionate. Ambitious and grounded. You can lead with both heart and standards.

There will always be rooms that do not immediately know what to do with you. That does not mean you do not belong there. Sometimes it means the room needs to expand.

I Build Pathways

At one point in my career, impact looked like helping a young person learn a skill, earn confidence, and step into independence. Later, it looked like helping students grow as readers, thinkers, and communicators. Now, it looks like helping schools and districts build stronger systems so more teachers and students can thrive.

The thread has never changed.

• I build pathways.
• Pathways into work.
• Pathways into learning.
• Pathways into literacy.
• Pathways into leadership.
• Pathways into rooms where people once wondered if they belonged.

Pa'lante-always forward, even when the road is not straight.

And maybe that is the gift of a winding path. You learn that the detours were not wasted. They were preparing you to see things from more angles, connect with more people, and lead with more depth.

A straight line may get you there faster. But a winding path can teach you how to bring more people with you.
