Her Story
About Heather
Heather Smith is an accomplished culinary professional who serves as Executive Chef at Sunrise Social in Uniontown, Ohio. In her role, she oversees kitchen operations, develops creative menu offerings, maintains food safety and cleanliness standards, and manages labor and food costs. With a passion for crafting memorable dining experiences, Heather recently introduced a fall menu featuring innovative dishes such as apple pie-stuffed French toast with butterscotch sauce, pear and Havarti harvest sandwiches, and orchard bacon Benedict with brown butter hollandaise.
Heather’s culinary journey began in her early teens, when she helped her mother with kitchen duties and catering events. Through years of hands-on experience, she developed her skills across various food service settings, working as a pastry baker, server, head baker, and line cook before advancing into leadership positions. At Burntwood Tavern, she earned a promotion from line cook to sous chef within four and a half months, becoming one of the youngest women in the company to reach that level. She later contributed to the opening of Gigi’s in Kent, further expanding her experience in kitchen management and culinary operations.
In addition to her executive chef responsibilities, Heather operates Cakes by Heather, her home-based baking business, where she creates customized cakes, cookies, and cupcakes for special occasions. Largely self-taught, she credits her early family influences, cooking shows, and practical experience for shaping her culinary abilities. She remains committed to continuous learning, refining her techniques, and exploring new ideas in the kitchen. Through her leadership, creativity, and dedication to her craft, Heather continues to bring her passion for food to both restaurant guests and customers who enjoy her personalized baked creations.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Heather
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work, perseverance, creativity, and my passion for cooking and baking. Through hands-on experience and a willingness to learn, I advanced into leadership roles while balancing motherhood and my career. My daughters inspire me to pursue my dreams, grow professionally, and build a lasting legacy through my own pastry business.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I’ve received came from my family, who taught me to embrace new experiences, keep learning, and make the most of life. My mother inspired my passion for cooking, while my grandparents encouraged me to explore my talents and pursue what brings me fulfillment. Their lessons continue to motivate me to grow, stay curious, and follow my dreams.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to work hard, continually develop your skills, and challenge yourself to learn new techniques. Although the culinary industry can be male-dominated, focus on proving to yourself what you can accomplish rather than seeking validation from others. Your dedication, growth, and willingness to improve will help you stand out.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the culinary industry is navigating a demanding, male-dominated environment while balancing career and family responsibilities. However, I believe perseverance, continuous learning, and adaptability create opportunities for growth. Having the freedom to develop menus and express my creativity as an executive chef motivates me to keep improving and work toward my dream of owning a pastry food truck.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Kindness, integrity, honesty, and accountability are the values I prioritize in both my work and personal life. I believe mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow. Being honest with myself, taking responsibility for my actions, and having the courage to improve help me become a better version of myself every day.
