Falling in love with a place happens slowly. Home isn't defined by location, but by memories, connections, and the reasons you find to keep growing there.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Heather

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success is built on resilience, radical self-honesty, and the determination to turn lived experiences into purposeful work. Leaving college early taught me that success isn't defined by traditional paths, but by the willingness to adapt, keep learning, and rebuild when life takes an unexpected turn.

Whether I'm writing books, capturing stories through photography, or building creative ventures, my foundation remains the same: persistence, vulnerability, and a commitment to owning my story. I believe our hardest experiences can become sources of strength, creativity, and connection—and that meaningful work can create a lasting impact beyond ourselves.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

"Don't wait for permission to claim your space—build your own table."

That advice transformed the way I approach my career. Instead of waiting for institutions or traditional systems to validate my abilities, I began creating my own opportunities, publishing on my own terms, and building platforms that reflect my values. I've learned that a nonlinear path isn't a limitation; it can be a source of resourcefulness, perspective, and vision. Ultimately, I've discovered that I don't have to follow someone else's blueprint to build something meaningful.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Own your story unapologetically, and never wait for someone else to give you permission to use your voice. Creative industries and independent publishing offer opportunities for people willing to embrace authenticity, develop discipline, and explore different forms of creativity.

Don't be afraid to take a nonlinear path. Learn the business and technical sides of your craft just as seriously as the artistic ones. Build your skills, create your own opportunities, and treat setbacks as lessons rather than reasons to give up. Protect your creative vision while remaining open to growth, collaboration, and change.

Most importantly, understand that vulnerability is not weakness. When paired with persistence, it becomes a powerful source of connection and creativity. You don't have to follow someone else's blueprint to build a career that matters. You can create a path that reflects who you are and the difference you want to make.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is standing out in an increasingly crowded digital landscape. With so much content competing for people's attention, building consistent visibility and meaningful audience connections takes patience, strategy, and persistence.

At the same time, independent publishing, digital platforms, and emerging technologies have created incredible opportunities for creative entrepreneurs. We have more ways than ever to share our stories, maintain ownership of our work, and connect directly with readers and communities without relying entirely on traditional gatekeepers.

I believe the greatest opportunity lies in combining authentic storytelling with smart, sustainable business practices. Technology can help streamline workflows and expand our reach, but it cannot replace the human experiences, emotions, and perspectives that make creative work meaningful. Those who learn to use new tools without losing their authentic voice will be well positioned to build lasting, independent creative businesses.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity, resilience, and service are the values that guide both my work and my personal life. To me, authenticity means having the courage to tell the truth, even when it is uncomfortable. Whether I'm writing memoir, creating fiction, or capturing meaningful moments through photography, I strive to preserve the raw, human experiences that help us connect with one another.

Resilience means continuing to learn, grow, and build, even when life doesn't follow a predictable path. I've learned that setbacks don't have to define us; they can shape our perspective, strengthen our determination, and give us a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

Above all, service gives my work a greater purpose. Through peer support, creative storytelling, and community-centered initiatives, I believe our lived experiences can become a source of hope and connection for others. We don't have to have everything figured out to make a difference. Sometimes, simply showing up, listening without judgment, and reminding someone they aren't alone can have a lasting impact.

Ultimately, I want my work and the life I build to reflect a simple belief: even our most difficult experiences can become part of something meaningful when we use them to create, connect, and lift others up.
