Her Story
About Holli
I've been in my field since 1996, about 30 years now. My main area of expertise is workplace culture and change management. I typically work with people at the section where they are experiencing crisis - something bad happens, there needs to be an immediate response, and my part of managing the response is around the human workforce. I work with senior leadership and sometimes middle management to ensure that teams have a sense of safety and an understanding that there is leadership and a plan in formation. When change is happening, either planned or as part of a crisis, change breeds a lot of organizational insecurity born out of uncertainty and fear. Having someone who can help manage and prepare for those situations ensures the continued and successful operation of the organization or business. I primarily work with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and occasionally get tapped to deal with political organizations as well. The class of experiences that I most enjoy is being able to help historic new leadership enter into and be successful within an organization - I've had the privilege of helping the first women hold roles as presidents, and the first Black something, or the first Latina. People who are coming into roles that are a historic change or shift in an organization are definitely at the top of the list of things that I love.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Holli
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my mom, my parents. And I would also say to having good people invest in me and trust me enough to share their wisdom and to share their access - their wisdom and their access.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is listening is more important than talking.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be kind, be curious, and be willing to do hard stuff.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity are exactly the same. The biggest challenge is that people are really afraid - we are living in an environment in the United States particularly, but I would also say the world, where people do not know, the sense of stability has been shaken, and so traditional norms are being disrupted, and it has made everyone scared. And scared people do unpredictable things. But it's also the biggest opportunity, because it is a moment of change, and in change, there's the opportunity to learn, grow, and get better.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Values that are most important to me are grace, because we all make mistakes and we need to have a space to be able to overcome them, so grace is probably the most important value for me. I think I would say grace, inclusion, and kindness.
