About Irina
Dr. Irina Bariakhtar is a physicist, educator, researcher, and science consultant whose career spans nearly three decades across Ukraine and the United States. She began her professional journey in 1987 after completing her studies in physics and education at Kyiv National University. Her academic foundation, combined with advanced research in theoretical and computational physics, led to significant contributions in semiconductor physics, nanotechnology, photovoltaics, and mathematical modeling. She later earned the equivalent of a Ph.D. in Physics and became actively involved in international scientific communities, including the American Physical Society and the Ukrainian Physical Society. After relocating to the United States in the mid-1990s, Dr. Bariakhtar combined scientific research with technology and education. For more than two decades, she served as a Visiting Scientist and Visiting Scholar at Boston College, where she conducted research in computational and theoretical physics while also supporting web development and communications initiatives for physics and biology departments. Her expertise extends beyond scientific research to science-focused web development, technical communications, and educational outreach. She also served as Webmaster for the Division of Condensed Matter Physics of the American Physical Society, developing digital resources and supporting outreach programs that connected researchers, educators, and students. Today, Dr. Bariakhtar consults from her home in Massachusetts on science-related projects and educational initiatives, including advising students interested in science and engineering careers through Ukrainian academic programs. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to advancing scientific knowledge, promoting education, and fostering international collaboration. Guided by values of honesty, teamwork, effective time management, and lifelong learning, she continues to contribute to both the scientific and educational communities. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Bariakhtar enjoys reading, gardening, painting, and playing the piano, a passion she has cultivated since the age of six. She is also a devoted wife and mother.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the strong foundation provided by my education, the values instilled in me by my family of educators, and the unwavering support of my husband and son. Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in my abilities have been instrumental throughout my journey. I am also deeply grateful for the opportunities I have been given through higher education and in the United States, where I have been able to pursue my goals and build a fulfilling career. I consider myself fortunate to be living the American dream and strive to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to pursue my dreams, never be afraid of challenges, and stay focused on my goals. With determination and perseverance, great opportunities can lead to success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to manage your time wisely, stay focused, and create a clear plan for what you want to accomplish. Set meaningful goals, remain optimistic, and approach every opportunity with diligence and determination. Consistency and a positive mindset can go a long way toward achieving success.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is staying competitive through continuous professional development while navigating industries that are still often male-dominated. Another challenge is effectively managing time and balancing multiple responsibilities. Balancing work and family needs is also seems to be a must for a modern woman at a nowadays workplace. At the same time, these challenges create opportunities for growth, leadership, and demonstrating resilience while achieving both personal and professional goals.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, determination and hard work. Strong family bonds and traditional family values are also one of the main values along with high respect to science and education that I grew up with and have built in my family. These values guide my decisions, strengthen relationships, and help create an environment of respect and accountability.
