About Jazmyn

My career journey has been purposeful, even though it took an interesting path to get where I am today. I have a bachelor's degree in English with a certification in professional writing, and while I had always wanted to get into broadcast journalism, advertising became my calling. Before entering the advertising world in October 2019, I worked in different industries that I believe were purposeful and led me to where I was ready to take on this fast-paced environment. My experience in banking taught me how to read people and address their behaviors, how to approach them in certain ways. Being a manager while I was at a bank taught me how to lead, and that not every style is the same - there is a foundation, but there are different styles to approach different people. My degree in English has given me media literacy that helps me think critically and beyond the box. I've actually brought in certain ideas to give clients who are creators different perspectives, things they maybe haven't thought about, and I think that just comes with expanding knowledge and learning from different authors and broadening your horizons. As a Business Affairs Manager, my day-to-day involves everything necessary on the back end that makes a production happen - contracts, legal payments to vendors, liaising with network clearance and our legal department and project managers and clients, making sure we are within guidelines and regulations. I deal with talent that is part of the Screen Actors Guild and some that are not, and I have to know those regulations. If I'm not on my job, we could get sued. Most recently, I attended a shoot for a client in Toronto, and when I came back, one of our head project managers gave me great accolades personally, saying I had done a stellar job and that clients loved me. What was really important to me was when they said this is the reason why we need Business Affairs on shoots. What I didn't know is that he had also told my direct manager the same thing and brought it up to our higher-ups in our C-suite, and it's something they're kind of revamping our structure to include. In 2024, I won the Rookie of the Year award at my agency, which means a lot when you're in your first year and every agency is different, but to have your hard work recognized motivates you to keep going at your best.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best feedback I've received is that I am great, but I just need to give myself a break. I've gotten where I am because I felt like I had to be the best, but I'm my toughest critic. I have grace for others, but I need to give myself a little more grace. That's something I'm working on - learning to extend to myself the same understanding and compassion I give to others. We need to do that more for ourselves.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would just say go for it. When I started in advertising, I did not meet the requirements other than having the education requirement that was required just to start, just to get my foot in the door at a very entry level. I knew absolutely nothing about advertising, and the pressure was there - people would say, we know you're her sister, so you're going to do great. But I would say don't be afraid. Pressure can come off as fear, but pressure is needed, so you turn into a diamond. You'll be surprised at what you can do, even if you start walking away. You'll be surprised at how far you've come. So don't undervalue yourself. Don't undervalue yourself. Pursue your dreams even while you're working, even if you have multiple dreams. I have a book I wrote that I need to put out. Just keep going after what matters to you.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I think accountability, transparency, understanding, and grace are the values most important to me. What I'm working on is that I have grace for others, but I need to give myself a little more grace. I am my toughest critic. I've gotten where I was because I felt like I had to be the best, but feedback I've received is that I am great, I just need to give myself a break. We need to do that more for ourselves as well.
