Jean Miki Nishimura is an educator, intervention teacher, and retirement planning advisor with a long-standing career spanning both education and the financial services industry. She holds a Master of Arts in Education from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a background in psychology, diversified liberal arts, and education. As a reading specialist with a Specialist Instruction in Reading and Language Arts Credential, she has dedicated many years to supporting student achievement through reading intervention and literacy development. Alongside her work in education, Jean has built a parallel career in financial services as a Health and Life Insurance Agent and Retirement Services professional. As an independent agent contracted with several companies, she specializes in retirement planning, annuities, and financial literacy, with a focus on helping individuals prepare for long-term financial security and retirement with dignity. She retired from her school district role in 2021 but continues to teach and serve clients in various capacities, reflecting her ongoing commitment to both education and financial empowerment. Jean is also an author and creative educator whose work is centered on helping children recognize their unique gifts and develop confidence through a positive mindset. She has written children’s books including The Head in the Clouds Duckling and Look Up and Hear the Music, blending storytelling with encouragement and emotional development. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to special adults and peers in my life who saw value in the work I submitted and elevated me into a leadership role starting in my childhood years. As a quiet child, it amazed me to be nominated and voted by my class peers to be the vice president and then the following year, the president of the class. Also, starting in my early years, I was recognized by my teachers for creative projects that were submitted, including artwork and written compositions.
My family facilitated my ability to accomplish my goals by providing a safe and calm space to concentrate on my academic studies while providing the inspiration and the means to explore my love of creative expression. In addition, my parents provided a background that develops children's academic performance, a bilingual education and music lessons. A bilingual education develops cognitive thinking and music lessons increase math skills. My sister and I attended a private Japanese language school on Saturdays, and we both learned how to play a musical instrument.
Receiving a strong foundation for academic achievement in my formative years developed the motivation and persistence to work through challenging situations in order to accomplish my goals. Setting realistic goals that were attainable and putting in the time and effort to achieve them enabled me to have small wins that led up to bigger wins. Despite the outcome, the wonderful people I met along the way and the skills I gained were of tremendous value.

Empowering Creatives Through Financial Literacy
Creatives naturally generate ideas and produce meaningful works of art. Developing expertise in their craft requires tremendous commitment, and continuing to grow in their field demands both time and energy. As a result, little time remains for navigating the vast world of personal finance or keeping up with changes in the financial industry.
Yet the reach of their creations and innovations is often limited without a solid financial foundation.
This is why financial literacy—introduced early in a creative's education or career—is so important. It empowers artists to continue pursuing their passions while protecting both their own financial future and that of their families. In my early years as an educator, I was afraid to manage my own finances because I lacked the knowledge and confidence to do so. That realization prompted me to become licensed in the financial services industry. As I learned the language of money, I became less intimidated by the terminology used in financial literature. It was empowering to make informed decisions about my finances, and that experience inspired me to teach financial literacy to others.
My empathy for creatives comes from sharing their desire to create. Throughout my life, I have pursued creative projects as a way to foster self-discovery, personal growth, healing, and joy. My artistic endeavors include songwriting and writing children's stories. My songwriting collaborations are available on streaming platforms, and I am the author of two children's picture books, The Head in the Clouds Duckling and Look Up and Hear the Music.
Reaching a larger audience, however, requires promotion—and promotion requires financial resources. Expenses such as advertising, marketing platforms, graphic design software subscriptions, publicist fees, and travel can quickly add up.
Wearing multiple hats and working across several industries became a natural progression as I pursued my goals. As a former public school teacher, I remain passionate about inspiring a love of reading. Through author visits and speaking engagements, I hope to share the messages woven throughout my books: embracing our differences, celebrating our unique gifts, and recognizing the power of positive visualization and the beauty that surrounds us as we overcome challenges and pursue our purpose.
One of my greatest goals is to empower creatives with the financial knowledge and strategies they need to build a secure financial future while continuing their artistic pursuits.
