Ten minutes with Jennifer
01What do you attribute your success to?
I have never limited myself or allowed myself to be pigeonholed into a single field. I am a first generation high school and college graduate. I have tenacity, determination, and a willingness to try something different. My success comes from a combination of everything that people said would hold me back: a body that doesn't work the way it should, growing up in a working class family, and having to learn to work hard while accommodating my needs from a young age. Systems may not be designed for you, but that doesn't mean that you can't climb your way through them anyway.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what you love, but always make sure they pay you what you're worth.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
AI is a genuine threat to writing jobs. If you want to want to be a writer now then you must maintain your human voice. You must infuse your writing with emotion and heart, bring humanity to every piece. You know what people need to read. Yes, even in Public Health. You know how to reach humans in a way that AI cannot. Do that.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge right now is AI. Companies are using AI to do many tasks writers used to do. AI companies are hiring writers to learn how to write, and if you take those jobs then please know that those jobs will be temporary. You are training a computer to take your place. It's not impossible to overcome that. There are writing careers that AI cannot replicate. There are companies that prefer a human voice. Find your niche and you'll be fine.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Life is short, and I only take contracts that are meaningful to me. I have written everything from educational curriculum to plain language medical documents for a patient facing audience. The work must resonate with me on an intellectual and emotional level. I need to know that what I am working on matters, that it makes a difference.
My personal life is very much centered around my family. I strive to infuse my children's daily life with magic and wonder. I want them to remember a mother who was present and filled with love. I try to find time to read every day. Sometimes I paint (badly), and I love to go on slow nature walks where I take photos of landscapes and wildlife.
