Her Story

About Jenny

Jenny Kinsey is a New Mexico reporter for the Mountain West News Bureau and KANW-FM, bringing a diverse background in journalism, healthcare administration, and aging services to her reporting. Her journalism career began in radio and television during the 1980s and early 1990s, followed by freelance writing and a focus on aging and caregiving. Jenny holds a master’s degree in journalism from East Texas A&M University, formerly East Texas State University, and pursued doctoral studies in gerontological studies at Texas Tech University.

Before returning to journalism, Jenny built extensive experience in healthcare and senior care, serving as a hospice director, nursing home administrator, and executive director in assisted living. She was formerly licensed as a nursing home administrator in both Texas and New Mexico. Her professional expertise includes healthcare, aging services, hospice, assisted living, nursing homes, home health, and support for adult caregivers. Her experience as a family caregiver also informed her 2003 book, Elder Care in Texas: A Family Resource Guide, which sold its full print run.

Jenny is also active in journalism and community service. She was named president of the New Mexico Press Women’s Association for a two-year term beginning in 2026 and volunteers with the New Mexico Commission for the Blind as a Newsline coordinator and reader. She has also supported food banks, Indigenous education initiatives, religious organizations, and civil-liberties efforts. Outside of her professional work, Jenny enjoys exploring New Mexico, hiking and walking, gardening, cooking, singing and opera, theater, reading, and board games. Her commitment to journalism, caregiving, and community service reflects a career centered on communication, service, and supporting others.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jenny

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my strong faith, belief in something greater than myself, and commitment to serving others. Growing up in a multigenerational household also shaped my values, particularly my passion for caring for others and supporting disadvantaged communities.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to be passionate about what you do. Find work that genuinely excites you and gives you a sense of purpose. I’ve always loved healthcare and sharing information, so I believe in doing work that aligns with what you truly care about.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to build a strong educational foundation, find a subject you’re passionate about, and become a specialist in it. Embrace and stay ahead of technology, especially as AI continues to evolve, while also building a strong professional network and volunteering whenever opportunities arise. Stay open to unexpected opportunities—they can ultimately lead you toward the career you’ve always wanted.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are shrinking advertising revenue and the shift from traditional media to digital platforms, podcasts, and online news. At the same time, these changes create opportunities for those who stay ahead of technology, continue learning, and adapt to how audiences consume information. Being able to evolve with the industry is essential.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are transparency, integrity, and commitment. I believe in being truthful, keeping my word, and giving my best to the people and responsibilities that depend on me. I also believe in communicating openly when I need help and approaching my work, team, and commitments with a strong sense of responsibility.
