About Jessica
Jessica Rhoades is a dedicated educational professional serving as a High School Guidance Counselor at Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, Ohio. With more than 15 years of experience in education, she has built a career centered on helping students achieve academic success, prepare for college and careers, and develop strong social-emotional skills. Before becoming a high school counselor, Jessica worked as a first-grade teacher and gained valuable experience in human resources within the financial sector, giving her a well-rounded perspective on education, career readiness, and workforce development.
Jessica earned a Master of Education in Counselor Education/School Counseling and Guidance Services from Liberty University after completing a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and Teaching at Wilmington College. Her transition from human resources to education was influenced by the 2008 economic recession, ultimately leading her to discover a passion for guiding young people through important academic and career decisions. She draws on both her educational background and professional experience to help students explore opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings while preparing them for successful futures.
Throughout her career, Jessica has championed the importance of resilience, meaningful relationships, and lifelong learning. She believes that growth happens outside of one's comfort zone and encourages students and aspiring professionals alike to embrace challenging experiences as opportunities for personal and professional development. Passionate about networking, career exploration, and student advocacy, Jessica remains committed to empowering young people with the confidence, resources, and guidance they need to thrive in school, their careers, and their communities.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to grit. I believe resilience comes from facing challenges, learning from setbacks, and continuing to move forward, even when things are difficult. I often remind my students that they have survived 100% of their worst days so far. To me, grit is the willingness to embrace discomfort, persevere through adversity, and show up each day ready to keep growing.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from an HR manager who saw my potential and encouraged me to start as an entry-level assistant. That belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue a business degree and opened the door to countless opportunities. As the first college graduate in my family, I carry that lesson forward by mentoring my students and helping them see the possibilities for their own futures.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to embrace discomfort. The opportunities that challenge you the most are often the ones that help you grow. Step outside your comfort zone, invest in meaningful networking, and don't be afraid to introduce yourself and build genuine relationships—those connections can open doors and shape your career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in my field right now are the transportation barriers facing our students. Even with free driver's education, the cost of reliable transportation and auto insurance exceeds many families' budgets. Without access to public transportation, many students and families are unable to travel, which significantly limits their opportunities to explore careers and participate in work-based learning experiences.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are family, meaningful relationships, and building strong connections with others. I am passionate about supporting people, thinking creatively to solve challenges, and making a positive impact in my community.
