Jessica Stertzer, JD
Jessica Stertzer, JD, is a dedicated Staff Attorney at the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), where she represents low-income tenants facing eviction in New York County Housing Court. Guided by a strong commitment to housing justice, she works to protect the rights of vulnerable New Yorkers, ensuring they have access to fair representation and stable housing. Jessica is barred in both New York and Washington, D.C., reflecting her broad legal expertise and commitment to advocacy across jurisdictions.
Before rejoining NYLAG in 2024, Jessica served as an Associate Attorney at Slater Slater Schulman LLP, where she represented survivors of sexual abuse with compassion and skill, navigating trauma-informed legal processes to help clients find justice and healing. Her earlier experience at NYLAG, as well as her clerkship with attorney Paul Mones and her internship at the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic, deepened her experience in public interest law and strengthened her dedication to serving marginalized communities.
Jessica earned her Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she was recognized with the Award for Best Written Work in Civil Advocacy and received the Dean’s Merit Scholarship. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Williams College, where her interdisciplinary studies fostered her global perspective and cultural fluency. Fluent in English and Spanish, Jessica brings empathy, precision, and a deep sense of justice to every case she handles—advocating tirelessly for equitable access to legal support and fair treatment under the law.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to staying true to who I am, setting clear goals, and continually pursuing growth through education and lifelong learning. I also believe that helping others along the way has been an essential part of my journey and fulfillment. Outside of work, I have a strong passion for tennis and skiing, which keep me active and balanced.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to be the best version of myself every day. I strive to make a positive impact by helping those who are less fortunate and by always seeking ways to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay determined and maintain a positive mindset. Always be open to learning new things and embrace every opportunity for growth. Most importantly, stand tall and proud of who you are and what you bring to the table.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in my field right now is reaching and helping as many people as possible. It’s important to raise awareness about the resources and support we offer so that others know we’re here and ready to make a difference in their lives.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me—both in my work and personal life—are determination, continuous learning, and the courage to let my voice be heard. I believe in the power of teamwork and in making a meaningful difference every day, no matter how small the impact may seem. My professional experience spans paralegal work, litigation, and pharmacy (PharmD), as well as asylum and pro bono work—each of which has strengthened my commitment to advocacy, service, and lifelong growth.
