About Joanette

Joanette Brookes-George is a polymathic educator, violence prevention advocate, nonprofit leader, and strategic consultant whose work sits at the intersection of social justice, education, community safety, and organizational development. A survivor of multiple forms of violence, she has transformed her lived experience into a lifelong mission of service, dedicating more than 15 years to advocacy, awareness, and activism focused on domestic violence, human trafficking, community gun violence, and teen dating violence. As the principal consultant of Unmute Yourself, a volunteer-run nonprofit organization, she serves as a critical first point of contact for survivors, helping individuals navigate complex systems and access shelters, safe spaces, resources, and pathways toward healing and stability.

With more than two decades of professional experience spanning finance, education, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement, Joanette brings a unique multidisciplinary perspective to every initiative she leads. She is a certified financial planner, educator, psychosocial counselor, and business consultant who specializes in nonprofit and church capacity building, strategic planning, leadership development, and community empowerment. Her work extends beyond direct service, as she collaborates with law enforcement agencies, community organizations, think tanks, and public institutions to address the root causes of violence and create sustainable solutions that strengthen communities.

In addition to her consulting and advocacy work, Joanette serves as a university professor and recognized subject matter expert whose research and expertise focus on victimology, trauma, resilience, emotional intelligence, and violence prevention. She is frequently sought after as a speaker, trainer, media commentator, and advisor, providing insight on issues affecting vulnerable populations and underserved communities. Through her teaching, research, counseling, and community leadership, Jeanette remains committed to amplifying survivor voices, advancing social change, and empowering individuals and organizations to create safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joanette

01What do you attribute your success to?

I am defined by tenacity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to persevere through challenges. Even in the face of adversity, I remain steadfast in my determination to move forward, guided by hope, purpose, and a refusal to give up. My faith in God serves as the foundation of my strength, providing the courage, perspective, and conviction to overcome obstacles while continuing to grow, serve others, and pursue meaningful impact.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I prioritize self-care because I understand that meaningful work, especially work centered on supporting others through trauma and crisis, can be emotionally and mentally demanding. I believe in caring for the physical person who carries the responsibility of the mental and emotional work. Maintaining my well-being allows me to remain present, effective, and resilient in service to others. I also recognize the importance of seeking support when needed—because even those who help others heal need spaces for their own growth, reflection, and restoration. As the saying goes, even therapists need a therapist.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith in God has been the grounding force throughout my journey, providing strength, hope, and direction during life's most difficult seasons. It has sustained me through the transition from victimhood to survivorship, empowering me to heal, persevere, and find purpose in my experiences. Through faith, I have developed the resilience to overcome adversity and the conviction to use my story to support, encourage, and advocate for others on their own paths toward healing and transformation.
