Ten minutes with Joelle
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my 12-year career journey in the hospitality industry and the experience I gained by working my way through different roles, from starting as a busser to progressing into culinary leadership and eventually becoming a private chef and business owner. Along the way, learning from experienced chefs, and developing the ability to manage teams, create menus, standardize recipes, and oversee client engagements have all contributed to my professional growth.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to listen more than I speak. I have found that being willing to listen, learn from others, and pay attention to the experience and guidance around me can be invaluable throughout a career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the culinary and hospitality industry is to keep your mouth closed and your ears and eyes open. Listen, observe, learn from the people around you, and develop a thick skin. The industry can present challenges, and I have learned the importance of standing up for myself while continuing to learn and grow professionally.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are care, reliability, and respect for other people’s time and needs. In my professional life, I apply this through meal planning, private chef services, thoughtful client experiences, and taking care of the details that make an event run smoothly. I believe that creating an experience that is both thoughtful and well executed is an important part of my work. I believe small acts of care can have a lasting impact.
