Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kalina

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success is the result of two things: people who believed in me before I fully believed in myself, and a willingness to say yes to opportunities before I felt completely ready. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who challenged me to think bigger, work harder, and pursue opportunities that initially felt beyond my reach. Their guidance taught me that growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.

Just as importantly, my greatest motivation has always been my children. They remind me every day that success isn’t about having all the answers or being perfect. It’s about showing up with resilience, leading with integrity, and demonstrating that perseverance matters. If one day they look at my journey and proudly say, “That’s my mom,” I’ll consider that one of my greatest accomplishments.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is summed up in two words: “Okay…and?”

At first, it sounded dismissive, but it completely changed the way I approach my career. It reminded me that accomplishments are meant to be appreciated, not turned into my identity. In competitive environments, it’s easy to feel like you have to constantly prove your worth or justify why you belong. Those two words taught me to let my work speak for itself, stay confident without becoming complacent, and remain focused on what comes next.

That mindset has helped me navigate both success and setbacks with the same perspective. Celebrate the win. Learn the lesson. Then get back to work.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don’t wait until you feel completely qualified to pursue an opportunity. Some of the most defining moments in my career came from saying yes before I had every answer and trusting that I could learn along the way. Confidence is often the result of taking the opportunity, not the prerequisite for it.

At the same time, remember that your reputation is your greatest asset. In communications, people trust you with their stories, their organizations, and often their most challenging moments. Be dependable, stay curious, ask thoughtful questions, and never stop learning. Talent may open doors, but your character, work ethic, and the way you treat people determine whether those doors stay open.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in communications today is our ability to reach people faster and more directly than ever before. At the same time, that’s also one of our greatest challenges. With information moving instantly, organizations have only moments to build trust, correct misinformation, and communicate with clarity and credibility.

I believe the future of communications belongs to professionals who can balance technology with authenticity. Artificial intelligence, analytics, and digital platforms have transformed the way we work, but they will never replace sound judgment, ethical decision-making, or genuine human connection. Technology can amplify a message, but trust is still built person to person. The organizations that lead with transparency, consistency, and authenticity will be the ones that earn lasting trust.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Service, integrity, and continuous growth are the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe leadership is ultimately about serving others, whether that’s supporting a military mission, helping an organization communicate more effectively, or simply being present for my children.

I’m also committed to being a lifelong learner. I intentionally invest in leadership development, stay informed about changes in my industry, and remain open to new perspectives. My faith keeps me grounded in purpose and reminds me that success isn’t measured only by what we accomplish, but by how we serve others and the impact we leave behind.
