Her Story
About Kalyani
For more than 35 years, Dr. Kalyani Gopal has dedicated her career to walking alongside people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives—not simply as a clinical psychologist, but as a steadfast advocate for healing, justice, and human dignity. As the founder of the SAFE Coalition for Human Rights, president of the Psychology Coalition of Accredited NGOs at the United Nations (PCUN), owner of a private psychology practice, and trainer for professionals supporting survivors of human trafficking, she has spent decades advancing trauma-informed care, strengthening communities, and promoting human rights on a global scale. She is also an accomplished author whose works, including *Strong Roots, Safe Wings* and *Foster Parenting Step by Step*, provide practical tools for healing, resilience, and recovery. Despite her many professional achievements, Dr. Gopal considers her greatest accomplishments to be raising her children and cultivating the patience, compassion, and perspective that have shaped both her personal and professional life. "The journey itself is what I've loved most," she says—a philosophy reflected in every role she has embraced, from clinician and educator to researcher, international speaker, and humanitarian leader. Guided by a deep belief in the goodness and resilience of people, she continues to develop innovative clinical programs, conduct research, and advocate for survivors of trafficking, violence, and complex trauma around the world. Dr. Gopal encourages young women to resist the pressure to follow conventional paths and instead pursue work that genuinely inspires them. "Take your time," she advises. "The world won't run away while you carefully weigh your options. Don't follow the popular path—follow your passion and your heart." Outside of her work, she enjoys spending time with her dogs, reading nonfiction thrillers, writing, and connecting with close friends. Through every chapter of her career, Dr. Gopal has demonstrated that meaningful leadership is built not on recognition alone, but on compassion, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to creating lasting change.

Ten minutes with Kalyani
01What do you attribute your success to?
My upbringing.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stay organized
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Take your time. The whole world is not gonna run away if you take time to make a decision and consider all your pros and cons before you make your decisions. Don't do what everybody else is doing. Go after your heart. Do what you want to do. It may not be the most popular thing. Don't measure success by other people's yardstick.
