Her Story

About Kamisha

Kamisha Allen is an experienced higher education and nonprofit leader with more than two decades of experience in higher education and student finance. She serves as Operations Program Manager and President of The HP Foundation, an organization she founded in May 2020 to support bereaved parents facing the emotional and financial challenges associated with losing a child. Before transitioning into nonprofit leadership, Allen advanced through several roles in higher education, ultimately serving as Director of Financial Aid and leading student finance operations. Her background in financial administration, program management, and organizational leadership provides a strong foundation for her work supporting families and strengthening communities.

Allen established The HP Foundation following the loss of her son, an experience that brought profound grief and unexpected financial hardship when life insurance did not cover the costs of his burial. Motivated by her personal experience, she created the foundation to help other bereaved parents navigate similar circumstances and access meaningful support. The organization emphasizes compassion, community engagement, and financial assistance while creating opportunities for families to connect and find moments of encouragement during difficult times. Through annual initiatives such as the Grief Christmas Cheers gathering, the foundation helps families create positive memories and build connections with others who understand their experiences. Allen is also involved with Arizona Impact for Good, reflecting her commitment to community-centered nonprofit work.

Allen attributes her success to transparency and a willingness to share her personal story to educate others about the foundation’s purpose and the needs of bereaved parents. She believes that openly sharing her testimony builds understanding, raises awareness, and helps others recognize the importance of sustained support for grieving families. Her leadership is guided by compassion, perseverance, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. She encourages aspiring professionals to remain focused, maintain balance, and stay committed to their goals despite unexpected obstacles, emphasizing the importance of adapting to life’s demands while continuing to move forward with purpose.

Ten minutes with Kamisha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to transparency and a willingness to share my personal story and testimony with others. By being open about my experiences, I hope to educate parents and everyone I encounter about the purpose behind the HP Foundation, why it was established, and the importance of the work it does. I believe that sharing my story honestly helps build understanding, raise awareness, and demonstrate why the foundation is needed.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay focused, maintain balance, and keep your eye on the prize. There will always be obstacles and unexpected responsibilities that require you to adjust your plans, but it is important to remain committed to your goals. Sometimes, you may need to step away temporarily to handle other priorities, but what matters is getting back on track. Finding that balance, staying adaptable, and persevering through challenges will help you achieve the goals you set for yourself.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our field is securing consistent funding for the specialized mental health needs of bereaved parents. While many funding opportunities focus on areas such as homelessness and domestic violence, the emotional and psychological challenges faced by grieving parents are often overlooked. Another challenge is demonstrating long-term impact, because helping someone heal, regain stability, and remain emotionally present for their family is not always easy to measure through traditional metrics. At the same time, this creates an opportunity to build partnerships with corporations and funders who recognize the importance of this work. With reliable, ongoing funding, we can expand our programs, reach more families, and provide the sustained support bereaved parents need throughout their healing journey.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are staying positive and creating meaningful memories with loved ones. I believe that time spent together is precious, and making lasting memories with family is something everyone should prioritize. Through The HP Foundation’s annual Christmas Cheers community event, we bring families together, including parents who may be experiencing financial hardship and struggling to provide Christmas for their children. We create opportunities for families to enjoy activities such as gingerbread house contests, cookie making, and ornament decorating. For me, the purpose goes beyond providing assistance; it is about encouraging parents to be present with their children, enjoy the moment, and create joyful memories they can cherish for years to come. Ultimately, I believe in maintaining a positive outlook, appreciating the people we love, and making the most of the time we have together.
