Her Interview

Ten minutes with Karen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God first, and then the support of my husband. Having that support with my partner is so important, especially when stepping away from a consistent income career like education to build a private practice where income may not be as consistent in the beginning.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to treat every open space in your schedule as an opportunity to grow your business. When you're building a private practice, clients may not come as quickly as you'd like, and cancellations are inevitable. Instead of seeing those moments as downtime, use them intentionally. Invest that time in marketing, networking, and building relationships within your community.

The work you do between sessions is often what fills your calendar in the future. Building a successful practice isn't just about being a great clinician—it's about consistently nurturing the relationships and visibility that allow your business to grow.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One piece of advice I would give younger women entering this field is to "chew the meat and spit out the bones." Learn from the wisdom and experiences of others, but don't feel pressured to follow someone else's path exactly. Every person's circumstances, family, finances, and season of life are different. What worked well for one therapist or business owner may not be the right fit for you. Whether you transition into private practice gradually or take a leap of faith and go all in, make the decision based on what is best for your life and your household. Allow advice to inform you—not define you. Build a career that aligns with your values, your goals, and the season you're in, rather than feeling obligated to replicate someone else's journey.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our field, especially for private practice owners, is keeping up with the constant changes in how clients find and choose a therapist. Marketing strategies are always evolving, and what worked a year ago may not be as effective today. Whether you accept insurance, operate as a private-pay practice, or use online directories, each business model requires a different approach to attracting and serving clients, not to mention the resource that ChatGPT can be to clients to find the best-fit therapist. I've learned that it's important to stay informed, remain adaptable, and connect with experienced professionals who can offer guidance. Being an effective therapist is essential, but learning how to successfully grow and sustain a practice is an ongoing part of the job as well.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith is the foundation of everything I do, both personally and professionally. It guides the way I serve others, make decisions, and navigate life's different seasons. I also value healthy boundaries. I believe there should be a time to work, a time to be present with my family, and a time to care for myself. That means knowing when to close the laptop, step away from work, and be fully present with the people who matter most. I'm still growing in that area, but working to be more intentional.
