Effort and Ease: Finding Balance While Dating After Divorce

One of the first things yoga teaches you is the balance between effort and ease. You have to engage, reach, and hold the pose with real intention. But if you grip too hard, if you white-knuckle your way through it, you lose the very thing you're trying to build. The pose only works when effort and ease exist together. Too much of either one, and you fall out of it.

I didn't expect that lesson to follow me off the mat. But it did, straight into dating again after my divorce.

Dating after divorce asks the exact same thing of you. You have to show up. You have to put in the effort: saying yes to the date, getting dressed, and showing someone your real self instead of a guarded version of it. But you also have to hold it with ease. You can't grip the outcome so tightly that you choke the life out of it before it has even had a chance to become anything.

That Balance Is Hard to Find

Here's what nobody warns you about: your heart doesn't ease back into dating gently. It gets on a roller coaster, and it takes you with it.

You meet someone, and somewhere in the middle of a conversation, you catch yourself thinking, I like him. And right behind that thought comes another one: What is he thinking right now? Does he feel it, too? Should I let my heart actually feel this and take the chance that he's feeling it back? Or am I about to be disappointed?

That's the real question underneath all of it.

Will this be another one that doesn't work out? Or will you be pleasantly surprised this time by something reciprocated? Will this person actually understand what you've been through and appreciate the person it has made you? Or will you have to explain, again, parts of your story that shouldn't need explaining?

I don't have a clean answer to any of that. I don't think anyone does. But here's what I've learned to hold on to: don't let the dates that don't work out turn you callous.

And just as important, don't let your previous relationship make you biased before a new person even has a chance to show you who they are. The person sitting across from you didn't do the things your ex did. They shouldn't have to prove themselves innocent of a history that isn't theirs.

Every new person deserves to be met as who they actually are, not as a stand-in for what someone else put you through.

There's a Real Difference Between a Thicker Skin and a Callus

A thicker skin protects you. It lets you take a hit—a bad date, a disappointing text, a person who wasn't who they seemed—and still get back up without it wrecking you for weeks.

A callus, on the other hand, doesn't just protect you. It numbs you. It stops you from feeling the good things, too, right along with the bad.

I want the thicker skin. I don't want the callus. I want to still feel it when something good is standing right in front of me.

So, when a date doesn't go anywhere, I try to remember that it's not proof that I'm unlovable or that it's never going to happen for me. It's information.

It's one more piece of learning about what I want, what I don't want, and who I actually am now, on the other side of everything I've survived.

That's not a detour from the journey.

That is the journey.

This is where effort and ease come back in. The effort is staying open, saying yes again, and letting your heart feel the roller coaster instead of numbing it.

The ease is trusting that you don't have to force any single date into being The One, or grip so hard that you can't enjoy it for what it is right now.

You can want something real and still hold it loosely enough to breathe.

Trust the Process

It's a phrase that has become basketball lore, born out of a Philadelphia 76ers rebuild that looked like a losing streak from the outside but was actually a team being built one deliberate piece at a time. Fans held on to those three words through years that didn't look like much yet.

I hold on to them the same way.

Trust the process.

Even on the days it feels like it's taking forever. Even after the ones that didn't work out. Even when your heart is halfway up the roller coaster hill, wondering if it's safe to feel this.

It is safe.

Feel it anyway.

You are not too much. You are not too damaged. You are not asking for too much when you hope for someone who sees your whole story and wants to be part of the next chapter of it.

Effort and ease.

Thicker skin, not a callus.

Trust the process.

Protecting Your Children Through Divorce

Divorce is between two adults. It should never be between two adults and the children caught in the middle of it.

If there's one thing I want every divorcing parent to hear, it's this: your children do not deserve to be caught in the crosshairs of a war they didn't start and can't end.

I help parents navigate this, and here's where it starts.

Leave the Marriage With a Custody and Visitation Plan Already in Place

Don't let this get figured out later, in the heat of an argument, or worse, through your children carrying messages back and forth between two households.

A clear plan, agreed upon ahead of time, gives your kids something solid to stand on while everything else in their world is shifting.

Structure is not the enemy of love. For a child going through a divorce, structure often is love.

Keep an Open Line of Communication With Your Children at All Times

Make sure they always have your phone number and know your address, no matter what the custody schedule looks like that week.

A child should never wonder how to reach you.

That's not a small detail. It's a foundation.

When kids know they can reach you, no matter what, they carry a kind of security that nothing else can replace.

Be an Active Parent Throughout the Divorce, Not a Background Character in Your Own Child's Life

It's easy, in the middle of your own grief, logistics, and exhaustion, to let parenting become something you do when it's convenient or when it's your scheduled time.

Resist that.

Show up for the school event. Ask about their day, and actually listen to the answer. Be present, not just available.

Don't Not See Your Children

However hard the logistics are, however awkward the handoffs feel, and however much you'd rather avoid the conflict, show up for your time with them.

Skipping visits, even occasionally, sends a message no explanation can undo: that something else came before them.

Whatever else is unresolved between you and your ex, protect the time you have with your kids like it's non-negotiable, because to them, it is.

Consistency and Communication, Even When They're Difficult for You, Are What Help Your Children When They're Young

It's easy to let consistency slip when you're the one hurting, when a conversation with your ex feels impossible, or when showing up steadily feels like the last thing you have energy for.

But your children don't experience your difficulty. They experience whether you were there, whether you followed through, and whether things felt predictable.

Every time you choose consistency over convenience, you're not just getting through today. You're helping build the foundation for what this new future family looks like—one where they can trust both of their parents, even in a different structure than before.

Support Their Emotional Needs, Even When Yours Are Running on Empty

Your children are processing loss, too—the loss of the family structure they knew, even if what comes next is healthier.

They need permission to grieve that, and they need you to be steady enough to hold space for it.

That doesn't mean you have to have it all together. It means you keep showing up for them anyway, even on the days you don't feel like you have much left to give.

Here's the Part I Want Every Parent to Really Sit With: Your Children Will Carry Your Mistakes From Their Childhood Into Their Adulthood

The way you handled the hard conversations. Whether you spoke badly about their other parent in front of them. Whether they had to comfort you instead of the other way around. Whether they felt safe or like they had to walk on eggshells.

All of it goes with them.

You don't get a chance to step in and fix it later, once they're adults, once the moment has already shaped who they became.

The parenting you do right now, in the middle of this hard season, is the parenting that lasts.

That's not meant to scare you.

It's meant to focus you.

You still have the chance, right now, to be the parent your children need through this. That chance doesn't come back around later.

The Relationship You Build With Your Children Now Is the Foundation for Who You'll Be to Each Other When They're Adults

Whatever you plant in these years—the trust, the consistency, the sense of being truly known and loved—is what they'll build the rest of their lives on with you.

You're not just getting them through a hard season. You're laying the groundwork for the relationship you'll have with them at 25, at 40, and at every stage after this one.

And here's the part that's hard to accept: once they're grown, you don't get to control their outside influences or their decisions.

Not who they choose to spend time with. Not the choices they make. Not the paths they take.

What you can control is what you gave them while they were still under your roof, still forming their sense of what love and stability look like.

That's the only window you have.

Use it well, and let go of trying to manage what comes after.

Divorce changes a family. It doesn't have to break a child.

The difference comes down to the choices you make while you're in it, not the ones you wish you'd made after the fact.

The Day I Lost My Home

I will regroup from this trauma. And so will you.

Monday, I lost my home to divorce. My home. For the first time in decades, I am not a homeowner.

I swallowed the jagged little pill today. I cried all the way through signing the papers, my pen shaking in my hand, tears landing on lines I still had to initial. That's just what a day like this actually feels like when you're honest about it.

A house is never just a structure. It's proof that you built something. It's the place that held your ordinary days—the ones you don't think to be grateful for until they're gone.

Losing it doesn't just mean losing an address. It means losing a piece of the life you thought you were building. And grieving that is real. It deserves room, not a rushed silver lining.

So, I let myself feel today. I didn't perform strength I didn't have. I let the tears come when they came. But I also let the laughter come because, somewhere underneath the grief, there was still a part of me that could see the absurdity, the weight, and the whole strange shape of this day—and laugh at it anyway.

This is effort and ease again, the same lesson yoga keeps teaching me.

Today, the effort was simply getting through it: signing what needed to be signed, packing what needed to be packed, and standing in the middle of an ending without running from it.

The ease was letting myself feel whatever came without forcing it into something tidier than it was.

I don't have a home right now in the way I used to define one. But I'm not starting from nothing.

I'm starting from everything I've already survived: a stroke I fought back from alone, a divorce I didn't see coming, and now this—another loss that asks me to rebuild, again.

I know how to rebuild. I've done it before. I'll do it again.

This isn't the chapter where I pretend it doesn't hurt.

It's the chapter where I let it hurt and keep walking anyway.

Thicker skin, not a callus.

Open heart, still.

Trust the process, even today. Especially today.

A house is not the same thing as a home.

I'm still figuring out where, and with whom, I'll build my next home and life, but I already know I will.
