The Courage to Begin Again

How life's greatest setbacks became the foundation of my greatest purpose.

There comes a moment in many women's lives when the path they've spent years building suddenly disappears.

Sometimes it's through loss. Sometimes it's illness. Sometimes it's a decision someone else makes for you.

Whatever the reason, you're left standing at a crossroads, asking one simple question:

"What now?"

I know that feeling well.

I'm originally from Scotland, but my professional career truly began after moving to Texas. I started as a receptionist in a veterinary hospital and, over the next twenty-one years, worked my way up to hospital manager.

Veterinary medicine wasn't simply my career. It became part of who I was.

Every client, every patient, and every difficult conversation taught me that compassion isn't just a skill—it is a choice you make every single day.

I had the privilege of working for two outstanding veterinary hospitals. The veterinarians I worked alongside each had their own unique approach, but they all shared one thing in common: they cared deeply about their patients and the families who loved them. I learned something valuable from every one of them.

Then Life Changed

I suffered an injury that eventually resulted in a total ankle replacement. Around the same time, my father in Scotland became seriously ill with a lung disease caused by years of workplace exposure.

Without hesitation, I stepped away from the career I loved.

Because some decisions aren't about careers. They're about family.

Those years taught me something no leadership course ever could.

Success means very little if you don't make time for the people who matter most.

I found myself traveling back and forth across the Atlantic, spending as much time with my father as I possibly could. Being unemployed at that point gave me something I couldn't have planned for—it gave me time. Time to be with him when he needed me most, and today, that is something I'll always be grateful for.

Those moments became some of the most precious memories of my life, and I wouldn't trade a single one of them.

When I was ready to return to work, I received a call from the hospital manager who had first given me my opportunity in veterinary medicine. They knew my circumstances and understood that I might need to travel back to Scotland again.

I gladly accepted.

Returning to veterinary medicine felt like coming home.

I believed I was simply picking up where I had left off. Life, however, had other plans.

For the first time in over two decades, I found myself in a situation where I felt my integrity and commitment were being questioned. After dedicating so much of my life to the profession, it was incredibly painful.

It hurt.

But sometimes what feels like rejection is actually redirection.

Looking back now, that difficult chapter became the turning point I never knew I needed.

Instead of asking why it happened, I began asking a different question:

"If I could build my own workplace, what would it look like?"

The Answer Became Woof Tone Inn & Spa

We started with an empty building and an enormous dream.

I didn't want to create another boarding facility. I wanted to create a place where every dog would be treated like family and where every client would feel complete trust the moment they walked through our doors.

During the renovation, my father passed away.

The grief was overwhelming.

Rather than letting it stop me, I poured every ounce of my energy into building Woof Tone. Brick by brick, room by room, it became more than a business. It became part of my healing.

Every lesson from my veterinary career found a new home.

I wasn't just building a business—I was building the kind of place I would have been proud to work in myself.

Every challenge I'd experienced shaped the culture I wanted to build.

Today, our business continues to grow, but the numbers aren't what make me proud.

• I'm proud when a dog runs through our front door because they're excited to see us.
• I'm proud when a client tells us they can finally enjoy their vacation because they know their pet is safe.
• I'm proud when a member of my team feels respected, supported, and empowered to do their very best work.
• I'm proud that we've built something based on compassion instead of competition.

People Often Ask Me What Advice I Would Give to Women Thinking About Starting Over

My answer is always the same.

• Don't wait until you feel ready. You may never feel ready.
• Instead, trust that every experience you've lived through—even the painful ones—has prepared you more than you realize.
• The hardest chapters of your life often become the strongest chapters of your story.

Mine certainly did.

Today, I don't define myself by the career I left behind. I define myself by the life I chose to build next.

Because sometimes beginning again isn't starting over. It's finally becoming the person you were always meant to be.

If you're standing at one of life's crossroads, wondering, "What now?", my hope is that you'll keep moving forward. You don't need all the answers. You don't need the perfect plan. You simply need the courage to begin again. Because sometimes the life you never expected becomes the life you were always meant to build.
