Her Story

About Karla

With over 25 years of experience in the academic sector, my career is defined by a commitment to educational excellence and institutional growth. I began my journey in foundational roles such as a substitute teacher and paraprofessional, eventually transitioning into the classroom as an elementary and secondary educator. These early experiences provided me with a comprehensive understanding of student needs and instructional dynamics.

My shift into administration was marked by a successful tenure as a Middle School Assistant Principal, where I led a comprehensive culture revitalization. By building trust and establishing rigorous standards from the ground up, I successfully stabilized the school environment. Currently, as a High School Principal, I oversee the full spectrum of campus operations, including fiscal management, master scheduling, and specialized student services (ESE/504). I am a firm believer in the power of collaborative leadership and thrive in fast-paced environments that demand adaptability and strategic problem-solving.

Ten minutes with Karla

01What do you attribute your success to?

I am a firm believer that we are only as strong as the people we stand beside. Working with such a talented group of educators makes it possible to reach goals that seem impossible alone. Personally, I’ve learned that growth rarely happens in a 'comfort zone.' I approach every day ready for the next challenge, fueled by a spirit of adaptability. I also recognize that my professional journey wouldn't be possible without a strong foundation at home. Having a partner who encouraged me to pursue my degrees and take the leap into leadership gave me the confidence to take risks and pursue the path I am on today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Two things:

A mentor told me when I was young that, "conflict is necessary in order to obtain peace." This was a life changer for me because it helped me to understand that we must confront and have those crunchy conversations in order to bring about change.

My Mom also gave me some good advise from the bible: It is more blessed to give, than it is to receive. When we realize it is not always about us, we are more content and productive.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best advise I would tell someone is to be true to yourself and your core values, and to take risks and do it afraid. If you are not willing to allow some discomfort, it is difficult to grow and make change.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Currently, the 'heart' of education is facing a significant challenge in the form of social-emotional wellness. We are seeing a generation of students grappling with unprecedented levels of anxiety and social pressure, which directly impacts their ability to learn. When you combine this with the struggle for equitable funding, the job of a school leader becomes a delicate balancing act.

I see this as a pivotal opportunity to redefine the school experience. We have the chance to move beyond traditional metrics and focus on the 'whole child.' By securing equitable opportunities and fostering inclusive environments, we aren't just teaching subjects; we are equipping students with the emotional intelligence and resilience they need to thrive in a modern world.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My most important thing in my life is my family. They are my reason. I want to lead my children and grandchildren by being an example of a thriving and successful woman.
