Ten minutes with Karla

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my upbringing and to a mindset that has always pushed me to take chances rather than wonder, "What if?"

I was raised by a single mother after losing my father when I was just two years old. As the youngest of four children, I grew up watching my mother turn very little into something meaningful through hard work, determination, and resilience. That example shaped who I am today.

I didn't grow up with connections or endless opportunities. In fact, I didn't set out with a plan to enter the insurance industry. The opportunity presented itself, and I chose to embrace it. That decision taught me that success often comes from being willing to step into unfamiliar territory and make the most of the opportunities in front of you.

What has driven me throughout my career is the belief that every challenge holds potential and that growth begins when you're willing to try. I have always viewed starting from zero as an advantage when you're at the bottom, the only direction to go is up. I'd rather take a chance on something new and learn from the experience than spend my life wondering what could have been.

That willingness to keep moving forward, combined with the resilience I learned from my mother, is what I credit most for my success

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received was to do it even when you're not ready. Too often, we hold ourselves back because we think we need more experience, more knowledge, or more confidence before taking the next step. The truth is, confidence is built through action, not before it.

When I started my career at 19, I was often the youngest person in the room. Even today, people are surprised by how young I was when I entered the industry. It's easy to question your value or wonder if you're qualified enough, but you have to learn to say yes to yourself before anyone else does.

I've always believed that it's better to try than to spend your life wondering, "What if?" The worst case scenario is that you learn something valuable. Growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and being willing to embrace opportunities, even when they feel intimidating.

The reality is that no one knows everything. I certainly don't. The insurance industry is constantly evolving with new products, regulations, and information, and there is always something new to learn. Success doesn't come from having all the answers it comes from being willing to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.

Trust yourself, take the opportunity, and don't let fear of being unprepared stop you from pursuing your goals.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to think bigger than the opportunity directly in front of you.

When I first entered the insurance industry in 2018, my focus was solely on life insurance. As I gained experience, I was introduced to other areas, including auto, home, and commercial insurance. That opened my eyes to just how many opportunities exist within this field and how much potential there is for growth.

One of the greatest things about this industry is that you don't have to limit yourself to a single specialty or license. The possibilities are much broader than many people realize. With the right education, training, and determination, you can expand your expertise, serve diverse communities, and build a career that continues to evolve over time.

I encourage women to keep learning, remain open to new opportunities, and never underestimate the size of their potential. Whether it's earning additional licenses, exploring new markets, or serving clients across different states, there is always room to grow. The more you invest in yourself and your knowledge, the more doors you can open for your future.

Don't put limits on what you can achieve. Think big, stay curious, and be willing to explore every opportunity available to you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in my field right now is balancing the growing complexity of the insurance industry while continuing to educate and serve clients effectively. As insurance products, regulations, and carrier options evolve, it's more important than ever to help clients understand their choices and make informed decisions.

I've learned that success in this industry goes far beyond knowing the products. It's about understanding people. Every client has unique concerns, goals, and circumstances, and being able to truly listen and identify their needs is one of the most valuable skills an insurance professional can develop. Over the years, I've gained the experience to recognize what clients are really looking for, even when they may not know exactly how to express it.

Another important area of growth has been building confidence and overcoming self imposed limitations. Like many professionals, I've faced moments that challenged my confidence, but I've learned to trust my knowledge, experience, and the value I bring to my clients. That mindset has allowed me to continue growing in my field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me, both professionally and personally, are education, trust, and confidence.

Education is at the center of everything I do. I believe people make the best decisions when they fully understand their options, so I am passionate about helping my clients understand not only what they have, but why it matters and how it protects them and their families. Empowering others through knowledge is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Trust is equally important. In my industry, clients are sharing personal information and making significant financial decisions. Whether we are meeting in person or working together remotely, they are placing a great deal of trust in me. I take that responsibility seriously and strive to build relationships based on honesty, transparency, and integrity.

Confidence is another value that has shaped both my personal and professional journey. It's something I've worked hard to develop within myself, and it is also something I aim to instill in my clients. I want people to feel confident in the decisions they make, confident in the protection they have in place, and confident that they have someone they can rely on to guide them through important financial choices.

Together, education, trust, and confidence create the foundation for meaningful relationships, informed decisions, and lasting success in both life and business.
