Her Story
About Kate
Kate (편하라) Mayne is a community engagement and marketing professional based in Portland, Oregon, with over a decade of experience spanning nonprofit communications, brand storytelling, and cross-sector marketing. She currently serves as Community Engagement Director at the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, where she was recently promoted after two years with the organization. In this role, she leads integrated marketing, communications, and outreach strategies, oversees major fundraising and community events, and builds partnerships with community leaders, sponsors, and stakeholders to expand the organization’s visibility and impact across Oregon.
Her career path has been highly diverse and international, taking her across multiple industries and continents, including approximately seven years living and working in Korea. After returning to the United States, she faced challenges re-entering the job market due to her international experience, which was not always understood or valued by traditional employers. She began her career in for-profit sectors, particularly in skincare and marketing, but ultimately experienced burnout from product-focused work. A pivotal transition came when she moved into a client-facing role at a behavioral health organization in Vancouver, Washington, which she discovered through a friend in the therapy field. Although she had no prior experience in the sector, she quickly developed a passion for client support and community-centered work, ultimately shifting her career trajectory into the nonprofit space.
Since then, Kate has built a career grounded in mission-driven work, finding deep fulfillment in organizations whose values she can fully align with. Her current role is especially meaningful to her due to her personal connection her grandmother is blind which strengthens her commitment to advancing sight and hearing services. She is an active networker and community builder, participating in multiple professional organizations where she serves on committees and in leadership roles. Known for her willingness to step in, take initiative, and fill gaps where needed, she continues to refine balance while embracing her natural tendency toward service and engagement. Her broad, cross-industry experience has shaped her into a highly adaptable and strategic professional who thrives in dynamic environments and is deeply committed to meaningful community impact.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say that because I have so many interests, I've been able to have the opportunity to have such a diverse experience background. I feel like I've been in every single industry, and it's been really interesting to see how each of those industries impacts my day job and helped me to think strategically in different ways than might not come to some people that might stay in the same industry forever. I think it's helped me be really flexible and really adaptable in my personal and professional life. I'm able to make connections really easily because I've just had to, wherever I go. I'm a social extrovert, so I have to be around people, and I've had to learn the skills to befriend people and continue those conversations and connections. My job isn't a typical 9-to-5 where I do the same thing every single day - it changes literally every day - and having that flexibility and adaptability has really helped ensure that I'm the most effective, efficient colleague or person.
