About Kathleen
Kathleen Boyce serves as the Alumni Relations Manager for the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she creates programs and engagement opportunities that strengthen connections between alumni, students, faculty, and the university community. With nearly 20 years of experience in higher education, including 14 years at George Mason University and more than five years at Virginia Tech, she has built a career centered on communication, collaboration, and community building. She earned a bachelor's degree in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from George Mason University and is nearing completion of her master's degree in Public Administration at Virginia Tech. Throughout her career, Boyce has focused on developing meaningful alumni experiences that encourage long-term involvement and lasting relationships. She leads initiatives that increase participation through events, networking opportunities, and strategic engagement programs designed to keep alumni connected to the department. Her approach emphasizes creating value beyond fundraising by fostering mentorship, professional connections, and a strong sense of belonging within the Electrical and Computer Engineering community. Her dedication to excellence has earned her nominations for the 2022 DC Area Outstanding Staff Award and the 2022 President's Award for Excellence. Boyce credits her success to the encouragement of mentors, supportive colleagues, friends, and family, with her current supervisor, Angela Mills, serving as an especially influential mentor as well as her colleague and friend, Chelsea Seeber. She believes authenticity, integrity, and genuine relationships are the foundation of effective leadership and professional growth. Passionate about helping others succeed, she encourages the next generation of professionals to remain curious, advocate for their ideas, seek out mentors, and build meaningful connections that create lasting opportunities throughout their careers.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the incredible friends who have inspired and encouraged me throughout my journey, the supervisors and mentors who have invested in my growth, and my mother, whose unwavering love and support have been a constant source of strength.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to believe in my abilities and have confidence in my voice. Trusting my instincts, speaking up, and embracing new opportunities have allowed me to grow as a professional and make meaningful contributions throughout my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be authentic and build meaningful relationships that inspire growth, collaboration, and success. Your unique perspective, resilience, and voice have value. Lead with confidence and never underestimate the impact you can make. Don't be afraid to advocate for your ideas, take initiative, and step outside your comfort zone. Seek out mentors who will encourage and challenge you, because the relationships you build throughout your career will become one of your greatest strengths and the foundation of your long-term success.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest opportunities in alumni relations today is finding creative ways to build and strengthen lasting, meaningful relationships. As alumni interests, needs, and engagement continue to evolve, it is important to listen thoughtfully, understand what matters most, and create opportunities that provide value. By remaining adaptable and focused on meaningful engagement, we can develop experiences that keep alumni connected to their community and foster lifelong relationships.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most are building meaningful relationships, making a positive impact, and acting with integrity. I enjoy working collaboratively with others, creating an environment built on trust and respect, and supporting people as they achieve shared goals. I believe that authentic relationships and teamwork are essential to both personal fulfillment and professional success.
