Her Story
About Kathryn
Kathryn Starke is an educator, entrepreneur, author and literacy advocate whose career has been dedicated to helping children learn to read and supporting the educators who teach them.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Kathryn began her professional journey as an elementary school teacher, working with students in first, second and third grades. While teaching second grade, she wrote her first children's book, Amy's Travels, to help students learn about the seven continents. What began as a classroom resource became the foundation for Creative Minds Publications, the independent publishing company she established to print, publish, market and distribute her book.
For years, Kathryn operated her publishing business in the evenings while continuing to teach during the day. She eventually transitioned into a reading specialist role, earned her master's degree in literacy and culture and advanced into district literacy coaching and national educational consulting.
Throughout her career, she has helped more than 200 elementary schools strengthen literacy instruction by supporting teachers in developing effective reading and writing practices.
Kathryn is also the creator of Tackle Reading, an annual literacy initiative involving the National Football League. The program has reached its 10th annual year, combining her passion for education with the ability of sports to inspire young readers.
As the Founder and CEO of Creative Minds Publications, Kathryn leads an independent publishing company specializing in engaging, educational and inspirational books for readers of all ages. The company has worked with organizations including the NFL, NFL Alumni, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Dr. Seuss Enterprises and the University of Chicago.
An accomplished author of six books, Kathryn has received recognition for her writing and educational contributions. Her first children's book, Amy's Travels, was adapted into a musical by the Latin Ballet of Virginia. She was also selected as a speaker for the 2025 World Literacy Summit at Oxford University.
Kathryn continues to expand Creative Minds Publications by supporting independent authors, particularly in children's literature and faith-based publishing. She also hosts Starke's Remarks, a YouTube program celebrating independent authors and their work.
Her professional philosophy is rooted in persistence, creativity and the belief that meaningful work can make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kathryn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to believing in myself, following my instincts and being persistent. Over the years, I've learned to let my work speak for itself, whether through results, book reviews, speaking engagements or awards.
In the beginning of my career, I wasn't taken seriously as an educational speaker or consultant because some people thought I was too young. I wasn't taken seriously in publishing because I was a woman. I've learned that being underestimated can be a blessing.
I focus on creating circles of people who are mission driven, goal oriented and supportive of others.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in yourself before anyone else believes in you. Persistence.
Don't be discouraged when you are misunderstood. Don't dim your light to make other people more comfortable.
I've learned to have my work speak for itself. Being underestimated can be a blessing.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI in publishing and education.
I'm excited to help even more authors bring their books to life, specifically in children's books and faith-based titles, to develop a quality catalogue.
Independent books deserve to be celebrated and championed. In the future, we would love to see our books turned into educational, inspirational and entertaining television programs and movies.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I believe in myself and follow my instincts. I focus on creating circles of people who are mission driven, goal oriented and supportive of others.
