Ten minutes with Keisha
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my parents, specifically my mother. She had my twin sister and I when she was 19 years old. My sister was born with two holes in her heart and was often sick throughout our childhood, and passed away when we were in the fourth grade. My mother is a cosmetologist, and she opened her hair salon when I was in the 8th grade, and it is still open today. She is smart, strong, compassionate, and resilient. She knows who she is and stands by what she believes. She taught me to do the same. If my mom says I can do it, I know I can do it. She is my biggest cheerleader and my motivation. My father always said to do the best in everything that you do, and I do the best that I can each day for my patients.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice that I have ever received is that a delay is not a denial. Sometimes things may take longer than we want but it does not mean that it won't happen.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell young women entering this field to make sure they prioritize self-care. It is easy to get burnout, when you're experiencing heavy caseloads, demanding work and high stress. Self- care is not selfish but mandatory for your physical and mental health.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Obtaining a social work license is a great opportunity. The LCSW is the most widely recognized clinical social work license across the U.S. It allows professionals to diagnose and treat mental health conditions independently. Licensure requirements vary from state to state.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, kindness, compassion, accountability, and honesty are values that are most important to me.
