About Kimberly
Kimberly “Kim” Emory serves as Interim Executive Director of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, bringing 16 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and a lifelong commitment to advocacy, education, and community service. Her involvement with the organization began as a volunteer before she progressed to President of the Board of Directors and ultimately assumed her current executive leadership role. As a 20-year ovarian cancer survivor and passionate advocate, Emory is dedicated to educating the public about the signs, risks, and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Through school visits, health fairs, and community outreach initiatives, she works to promote awareness and encourage early diagnosis.
Before transitioning into nonprofit leadership, Emory built a distinguished 37-year career with the Internal Revenue Service, advancing from clerk to tax examiner, auditor, and ultimately program analyst before retiring from federal service. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in political science in 1989, an educational foundation that complemented her strengths in communication, analysis, and public engagement. Her professional journey reflects remarkable versatility, perseverance, and a commitment to continued growth across both government and nonprofit sectors.
In addition to her leadership and advocacy work, Emory is an author, speaker, and writer who uses her personal experiences as a survivor and adoptee to inspire others. She is the author of Pieces of Me: Perfectly Imperfect, in which she shares her journey with honesty and authenticity. Emory attributes her success to perseverance, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose, and she encourages others to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new opportunities, and pursue personal and professional growth. Through her leadership, advocacy, and storytelling, she continues to make a meaningful impact in the fight against ovarian cancer and in the lives of those she serves.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose. Surviving ovarian cancer taught me to recognize that every day is a gift and that even the most difficult challenges can present opportunities for growth, transformation, and renewed purpose. My experiences have strengthened my determination to move forward, embrace adversity, and remain committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to step outside of my comfort zone and be willing to take on challenges that are unfamiliar or unexpected. Growth often comes from trying things I would not normally do, embracing new opportunities, and remaining open to learning along the way. Stepping beyond what feels comfortable has allowed me to build confidence, discover new strengths, and continue growing both personally and professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering my industry to believe in their worth and recognize the value they bring to every opportunity. Do not be afraid to take up space, ask questions, speak up, and make your voice heard. Pursue opportunities that challenge you, remain open to learning, and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Growth often begins where comfort ends, and confidence is built by embracing challenges and trusting in your own abilities.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field involve identifying the right opportunities to grow, developing as a leader, and finding meaningful ways to make a lasting difference. I believe effective leadership requires continuous learning, self-reflection, and a willingness to step outside of my comfort zone. At the same time, there is a tremendous opportunity to use my experience, voice, and leadership to create meaningful impact, advance important causes, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, integrity, compassion, authenticity, faith, and service to others. I believe in treating people with respect, leading with genuine care, and using my experiences and abilities to make a meaningful and positive impact. I strive to live authentically, remain true to my values, and approach every opportunity with a spirit of service and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
