Her Story

About Kinyana

I've been working in event production for over 10 years. What inspired me to get into this field was seeing a real need, especially for women, to create events and generate leads for event production. I'm not just talking about concerts, but also conferences and professional services. I saw there was a bridge gap in that area, so I definitely wanted to take up some room in this space and show that there's equity for women to thrive, network, communicate, develop community, and generate sales. That's why I entered this field. My typical day involves managing content, recapping our events, and generating leads, sales, proposals, and RFPs for new opportunities in the event space. I apply my marketing skills to the industry, bringing the strategy and knowledge I learned in school to where I am now. It's been really cool to have that level of training and applicability.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The greatest piece of advice I've received throughout my career is to critically think through problems, always. Always plan. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. That's something I always keep in mind.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always network. I feel like you should never stop networking and being innovative. I think people think that once you get in this space, you're never not going to stop doing work, but no, this is a relationship-building business. So always network to gain opportunities. Network, network, network.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the main challenges within this role is really continuing to level set expectations, and sometimes there is a slow period on gaining traction, so that can be one of the challenges. How I overcome that challenge is by pivoting in real time.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Work-life balance is a value. Family is a value. Peace is a value and purpose. Purpose is really important to me.
