Her Story

About Kristin

I work at Ovia Health by LabCorp, a position that ties in a lot of my personal life stage right now. I love being at a company that's so well established and influential in terms of healthcare, with the interwoven connection of women being what shines for me, specifically working mothers. Even just in my circles, I'm able to inspire people that they can find balance as working moms. I believe women are never going to feel like they're winning at every category, but finding that balance is so key, especially with kids under a certain age. I want to empower women to be able to chase both dreams simultaneously and not give one up, because so many people hit that stride, have a child, and feel like they have to give up part of their identity and their career to care for the kid, or vice versa. There's always this duality that sometimes we're at odds with ourselves, and I believe there's a way to strive for finding more balance within that working motherhood space. Before this, I spent years in fundraising for the nonprofit sector, focusing on higher education and a science institute for children, making educational opportunities available for all.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to showing up as authentically as I can and integrating all parts of my identity. I don't feel like you can balance multiple hats without bringing a little bit of both versions into those roles. That might mean me telling my kids to look at the PowerPoint I'm making and asking them about the colors I'm using, so I'm feeling like I'm being present with them while finishing work that needs to get done. When I'm in a professional space, I don't feel uncomfortable bringing up stories about my kids or meeting my peers where I'm at in a professional setting, making sure they know that my family is part of my identity. I'm not going to present without my identity as a working mom. I also think taking care of yourself is crucial. When you're feeling like you're taking care of yourself, you show up better as a mom, somehow you get more work done with less time, and you have energy. It's so much more than just checking a box. Prioritizing that is important to make sure you can show up fully.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The first value that comes to mind is energy. I really value energy because it's a finite thing that we can control and receive, and it fuels us, and then we can inspire others through it. If you show up without energy, you're doing the total opposite. Giving energy to me means you value me. Even right now, you're taking the time to hear my story, and that's a value that means a lot to me. The second is history. Understanding where someone comes from holds a lot of power. The history, whether it be a business that you're trying to understand their mission, their why, why they're making decisions, it's oftentimes tied to the history. Similarly, how people show up or why they do the things they do is tied to a lot of history. When people are talking about their story or why they're making a decision, I love to hear the history tied to it. This helps as we build our own narratives, and especially as working women, we're also defying history in general for what working women may have been known as in the past. Moms are the best multitaskers and program managers. Why not use that piece of your history to then leverage your career and give yourself some more credit?
