Kristin Wenger
Authentic, effective and reliable...these principles have guided my 26-year career in communications and public relations, helping brands earn meaningful media attention and tell stories that resonate.
My career began at VisitPittsburgh, where I spent two decades in the communications department promoting the city to a global audience and helping shape narratives that put Pittsburgh on the map. March 2020 brought an unexpected detour. Later that year, I partnered with a publisher to author two Pittsburgh travel guides.
In April 2022, I decided to take my career in a different direction. I took a leap of faith and began offering freelance services. What started as a six-month experiment quickly proved successful, leading to the official launch of KLW Communications, LLC in November 2022.
My focus is media relations, crafting compelling stories and building trusted relationships with journalists across all industries. I'm most proud to have secured client coverage on The Kelly Clarkson Show and Good Morning America, as well as placements in national top-tier and trade publications.
Since founding KLW Communications, I've partnered with clients across nonprofit, travel and tourism, education, biotech, retail, hospitality, healthcare and the restaurant industry, delivering strategic, results-driven communications that elevate brands and amplify their impact.
At the heart of my work is a simple belief: building trust, shaping perceptions and elevating voices is how lasting impact is made.

What do you attribute your success to?
Success, for me, is being true to myself, staying grounded and pushing through challenges. My parents taught me that I can achieve anything when I set my mind to it, and that mindset has guided me throughout my life.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received came from my dad during his battle with dementia. I shared a difficult decision I was struggling with, and without hesitation, he said, ‘Do what makes you happy.’ The very next day, I made that decision, one that ultimately changed my life. I will always carry his words with me.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I want other women to know it’s never too late to follow a different path or create a new journey for themselves. I never imagined I would own a business, but sometimes life presents unexpected opportunities. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and take a risk. Yes, it’s scary, but it’s also worth it. I started KLW Communications at 50, and it’s proof that betting on yourself can change everything.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in PR right now is navigating a media landscape where newsrooms are shrinking or closing, and journalists are wearing many hats. AI can be helpful, but it won't replace genuine storytelling and building real relationships. At the same time, there are exciting opportunities to expand beyond traditional media, such as podcasts, social media and platforms like Substack, which allow us to reach audiences in new, meaningful ways.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being true to yourself, transparent and authentic are values at the heart of how I build relationships, lead my business and navigate life.
