There was a time in my life when having a safe, stable place to call home was not something I could take for granted.

Today, I own a business built around helping other people care for theirs.

I think about that often.

I think about how strange life can be—how the very things that once broke your heart can eventually become part of your purpose.

Pretty Handy Home Helpers LLC may be a home-services company on paper. We paint, repair, clean, improve, install, restore, and help people take care of the spaces they live in.

But when I look at what I have actually built, I see something much deeper.

I see proof that a woman can rebuild her life even when she was never given a roadmap.

I see proof that beginnings do not have to be beautiful to become meaningful.

And I see proof that sometimes the most influential thing a woman can do is refuse to let the hardest chapter of her life become the last one.

I Learned Responsibility Before I Learned Who I Was

I became a mother at fourteen years old.

At an age when most girls were still figuring out who they wanted to become, I was already responsible for another human life.

I did not have the luxury of waiting until I felt ready.

Life did not ask me whether the timing was convenient.

It simply handed me responsibility and said, "Figure it out."

So I did.

Not perfectly.

Not without fear.

But I did.

I learned very young that strength does not always look powerful from the outside.

Sometimes strength is a scared young girl making the next decision because someone is depending on her.

Sometimes strength is crying when nobody is watching and then getting up the next morning.

Sometimes strength is admitting you do not know what you are doing, but deciding you are going to learn.

For years, I thought strength meant being the person who never fell apart.

I understand it differently now.

Strength is not never falling apart. Strength is learning that you are capable of putting yourself back together.

That lesson has followed me into every part of my life, especially entrepreneurship.

There Were Years When Life Felt Like It Was Taking More Than It Gave

I have known grief.

I have lost people I loved deeply.

I have known what it feels like to look around and realize that people who once felt permanent are suddenly memories.

I have experienced periods when security disappeared and I had to figure out what came next without feeling prepared for it.

There was even a period of my life when I experienced homelessness.

I wish I could say I moved through those seasons with perfect courage and unwavering confidence.

I didn't.

There were times when I was discouraged.

There were times when I questioned myself.

There were times when I could not see very far beyond the problem directly in front of me.

But I kept discovering the same thing:

I was still here.

And as long as I was still here, there was still something I could do next.

• One phone call.
• One decision.
• One job.
• One opportunity.
• One more attempt.

Sometimes rebuilding your life is not a dramatic transformation.

Sometimes it is simply refusing to stop.

The Business Was Built One Job at a Time

Pretty Handy Home Helpers did not begin with investors, a corporate office, or a large amount of startup capital.

It started with work.

Real work.

The kind that leaves paint on your clothes, dust in your hair, sore muscles at the end of the day, and a phone that never seems to stop ringing.

We took jobs.

Then more jobs.

We learned from every one of them.

One customer became another customer.

One recommendation led to another opportunity.

One project taught us how to handle the next one better.

And slowly, something that had started as a way to make a living began becoming a real company.

That process taught me an important lesson about entrepreneurship:

You do not have to see the entire staircase before you take the first step.

A lot of women believe they cannot start until they know everything.

Until they have enough money.

Until they have the perfect business plan.

Until they feel confident.

Until other people believe in them.

If I had waited for all of those things, I might still be waiting.

Sometimes you begin with the resources you have, the knowledge you have, and the courage you can find that day.

Then you learn.

Entrepreneurship Forced Me to Become a Student Again

Running a business required me to learn things nobody sees when they look at a finished project.

• Pricing.
• Contracts.
• Insurance.
• Scheduling.
• Marketing.
• Customer communication.
• Negotiating.
• Managing expenses.
• Building systems.
• Handling complaints.
• Protecting a reputation.
• Knowing when to stand firm and when to compromise.

And perhaps one of the hardest lessons:

Owning your mistakes.

Entrepreneurship will humble you.

There will be jobs you underprice.

Customers who choose somebody else.

Decisions you wish you had made differently.

Criticism that hurts.

Days when you wonder whether you are really capable of carrying everything you have created.

I have had those days.

But I have learned that leadership is not about convincing everyone that you are perfect.

Leadership is being able to look at yourself and say:

I could have handled that better.

And then actually handling it better next time.

I believe some of the strongest leaders are not the ones who never make mistakes.

They are the ones who never stop learning from them.

I Stopped Waiting for Permission to Belong

Home improvement is still an industry where a woman can walk into a room and be underestimated before she says a word.

There have been times when people expected the person with the answers to be a man.

There have been times when I felt like I had to prove myself before I could even begin the conversation.

For a while, that bothered me.

Then something changed.

I stopped asking myself whether I looked like the person people expected to run a home-services company.

I started asking whether I was willing to become excellent at what I did.

That question mattered more.

I learned.

I showed up.

I asked questions.

I solved problems.

I dealt with customers.

I handled estimates.

I faced difficult situations.

I continued building.

Eventually, I realized something that I wish more women understood:

You do not need somebody else's permission to occupy the space you have worked to earn.

Women belong in construction.

Women belong in home improvement.

Women belong in boardrooms.

Women belong in trades.

Women belong anywhere their ability, work ethic, intelligence, creativity, and determination can take them.

We do not have to wait until nobody doubts us.

Sometimes we simply have to keep building until the results speak louder than the doubt.

A Customer Is Never Just an Invoice

Working inside people's homes has taught me something else about leadership.

Business can never become so focused on transactions that we forget the humans behind them.

A home means something.

It is where someone raised their children.

It may be the first home they ever purchased.

It may belong to someone trying to make a fresh start after a divorce.

It may belong to an older person who can no longer make repairs themselves.

It may be the place where a family celebrates birthdays, mourns losses, argues, forgives, laughs, and comes back together.

So when someone contacts us, I do not want to see only a dollar amount.

I want to see the person.

Sometimes customers tell us that something is outside their budget.

Whenever it is reasonable, we try to find another option.

Maybe the scope can change.

Maybe labor and materials can be separated.

Maybe there is another solution.

That does not mean a business should undervalue itself.

Businesses have expenses. They need to survive.

But I believe there is a difference between making money from people and building a business by serving people.

That difference matters to me.

Because I remember what it feels like to need somebody to work with you instead of immediately writing you off.

Influence Is Not a Title

For a long time, I believed influential women were women who had already arrived.

Women with huge companies.

Women with impressive titles.

Women standing on stages.

Women who looked as though they had never questioned themselves.

I do not believe that anymore.

I believe influence happens every day.

A woman influences her daughter when her daughter watches her start over instead of giving up.

A business owner influences another entrepreneur when she admits that she made mistakes and shares what she learned.

A woman influences another woman when she tells the truth about how difficult something was instead of pretending success came easily.

A leader influences people when she treats them with dignity even when nobody is watching.

Sometimes influence is simply living your life in such a way that another woman looks at you and thinks:

Maybe I can do it too.

That is the kind of influence I want to have.

Not the kind that says, "Look how perfect my life became."

The kind that says:

Look how imperfect my life has been—and look what is still possible.

I Am Still Becoming the Woman I Want to Be

I am not writing this from the finish line.

There are still things I am learning.

There are still goals I have not reached.

There are still days when I doubt myself.

There are still parts of my life and business I want to improve.

And I think that matters.

Because too often women are shown only the polished version of success.

We see the award.

The business.

The announcement.

The photograph.

The finished product.

We rarely see the nights when that same woman wondered whether she could keep going.

I want women to see both.

Because somebody who is struggling right now does not need another impossible standard.

She needs evidence.

Evidence that a woman can be scared and still move forward.

Evidence that she can make mistakes without becoming one.

Evidence that she can lose things and still rebuild.

Evidence that her past does not automatically disqualify her from her future.

Evidence that she does not have to have everything figured out before she begins.

To the Woman Who Thinks She Is Too Far Behind

This is the part I hope somebody remembers.

Maybe your life does not look the way you thought it would.

Maybe you are starting again at an age when you thought you would already have everything figured out.

Maybe you are raising children while trying to build something of your own.

Maybe you have lost people you thought would be there to see you succeed.

Maybe your finances are not where you want them to be.

Maybe somebody underestimated you.

Maybe you underestimated yourself.

Maybe you have made mistakes you wish you could erase.

Maybe you are exhausted from rebuilding.

Please understand this:

Your starting point is not your value.

You are not required to have a perfect past in order to create a meaningful future.

You are allowed to learn.

You are allowed to change.

You are allowed to begin again.

You are allowed to become someone your younger self would not even recognize.

There was a version of me who could not see the woman writing these words.

She was too busy trying to survive what was directly in front of her.

If I could sit beside that younger version of myself now, I would not tell her that everything was going to be easy.

It wasn't.

I would tell her something better.

I would tell her:

You are going to make it through things you currently believe will destroy you.

You are going to lose people and still find reasons to love.

You are going to question yourself and still accomplish things you once thought belonged to other people.

You are going to experience what it feels like not to have a stable home—and one day you are going to build a company dedicated to helping people care for theirs.

And then I would tell her:

Do not give up on the woman you have not met yet.

Because that woman is waiting for you.

What I Built Was Bigger Than a Business

Yes, I built Pretty Handy Home Helpers LLC.

I am proud of that.

I am proud every time someone trusts us with their home.

I am proud every time a customer recommends us.

I am proud every time I learn something new and realize how far I have come.

But when I think about everything it took to get here, I realize the company was not the only thing being built.

I was being built too.

Every loss built resilience.

Every mistake built wisdom.

Every customer built experience.

Every difficult conversation built confidence.

Every failure built humility.

Every time I wanted to stop but chose one more step, I built endurance.

Piece by piece, I became a woman who understood that rebuilding is not something to be ashamed of.

Sometimes rebuilding is the bravest thing you will ever do.

My name is Krystal Johnson.

I am a mother.

I am an entrepreneur.

I am a woman building a company in an industry where women are still underestimated.

I have experienced loss.

I have struggled.

I have made mistakes.

I have started over.

And I have learned that none of those things have the authority to decide how my story ends.

I do.

So I will keep learning.

I will keep serving.

I will keep building.

I will keep becoming.

And if my story reaches even one woman standing in the middle of her own difficult chapter, I hope she remembers this:

The fact that your life needs rebuilding does not mean your life is ruined.

Sometimes what looks like the end is simply the place where you finally begin building something that belongs completely to you.

And I am still building mine.
