Ten minutes with LaTonya

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to discovering my purpose through my faith in God and finding my niche in substance abuse counseling and behavioral health. Once I recognized that this work aligned with my passion and the impact I wanted to make, I was able to pursue it with dedication, confidence, and a clear sense of purpose. A key part of my success has been leading with compassion, treating people with respect, and supporting others without judgment. I believe in advocating for clients, colleagues, and the organizations I serve while encouraging ethical practices and accountability. Finding the work that aligns with who you are and pursuing it wholeheartedly, with courage and without fear, has been the foundation of my professional journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to find my purpose, embrace my unique niche, and pursue it with confidence and without fear. Early in my professional journey, I questioned whether I was in the right field until I discovered my passion for substance use counseling and mental health advocacy. Once I recognized that my work aligned with my purpose, I gained clarity and a deeper commitment to serving others. I learned that the greatest impact comes from fully embracing the work I was uniquely created to do rather than trying to be everything to everyone. This lesson continues to guide me today, reminding me that confidence grows when I stop comparing myself to others and focus on using my gifts, values, and passion to make a meaningful difference.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice I would give to young women entering my industry is to trust the calling placed on their hearts and have the courage to pursue work that is both meaningful and aligned with their strengths. I encourage them to remain grounded in integrity, develop strong professional boundaries, and never stop learning. This field requires resilience, self-awareness, and a willingness to grow through both challenges and experience. I would also encourage women to use their voices, advocate for ethical and equitable practices, and seek opportunities that allow them to contribute to meaningful change. Confidence does not mean having all the answers; it means being willing to learn, ask questions, seek mentorship, and continue developing your expertise. By remaining authentic, intentional, and committed to excellence, women can grow into strong leaders and make a lasting impact on the individuals, organizations, and communities they serve.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field center around creating more equitable, inclusive, and effective leadership within behavioral healthcare organizations. Throughout my career, I have observed situations where management roles were predominantly held by men, while direct service positions were largely filled by women. I recognized the importance of addressing these disparities and advocated for greater equity by bringing these concerns to executive leadership. Through open communication and collaboration, I helped create opportunities for more women to advance into management and leadership positions. I believe that promoting fairness, recognizing talent, and ensuring diverse perspectives are represented are essential to building stronger organizations and improving the services we provide to the communities we serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are balance, accountability, and maintaining healthy boundaries. Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of setting clear boundaries and being intentional about creating space for both professional success and personal well-being. Earlier in my career, I often devoted an excessive amount of time and energy to serving others. Over time, I recognized the importance of establishing healthier boundaries and now prioritize a more balanced approach that allows me to be fully present in both my personal and professional life. My husband and children serve as my accountability partners, encouraging me to stay grounded, maintain perspective, and continue growing both personally and professionally.
