Her Story

About Latonya

I founded Be Empowered by Lady T about 2 years ago, starting with a Facebook group to encourage women around the world because so many of us wake up and struggle daily with different things, hormones, everything going on, and I just felt like we need encouragement from time to time. What started as a way to reach out to women who lost their mom, like I did, evolved into something bigger. I've hosted brunches and meet-and-greets, and in May I launched my Purses for Purpose event where I fill purses with personal hygiene items for women in need. I work at Trinity Cafe, which is owned by Feeding Tampa Bay, where we serve the unhoused lunch every day, 240 or less, 5 days a week. I've been there almost 3 years now, and I just did a Mother's Day event for the women we serve and I'm planning a Father's Day event for the men. But honestly, I've been helping the unhoused in Plant City where I live for years before that. I used to do the flea market with my mom, so I have stuff in my garage, and when I see someone who needs a jacket or shoes, I just stop and ask if I can help. If someone's getting an apartment and needs things, I try to donate what I can. My mom helped everybody, she wouldn't mind giving someone a ride to work or the grocery store, letting people stay with her if they needed somewhere to stay, and her and my dad just gave us that loving heart and passed it down. I'm working on getting my GED right now, I have my mental health certification from a class we took here in May, and I'm planning on getting into social work eventually. I want to become a navigator so I can give people resources and help them find the support they need. Eventually, I want to get my nonprofit so I can help even more people. If I can help one person a day, or make one person smile, I've done the work that God wants me to do.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to just being able to help as many people as I can. Like I said, I know I can't save the world, but if I can do one kind act for just one person a day, just like in my Facebook group, if one person says good morning and the message that I posted reaches them, it resonates with their spirit, then my day is complete. I know I made at least one person in the world happy. And I just see my Purses for Purpose event taking this around the world in the near future. What keeps me going is my mom and dad and the love that they showed, which I carry with me daily. My mom's nickname was B, so anything we see with BEE, we just associate it with her. So I'm just gonna keep going and doing what I can do. Like I said, if I can help one person a day, or make one person smile, I've done the work that God wants me to do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is just to keep going and never let anyone stop me from what I'm doing. There are gonna be people who won't accept what I'm doing because they didn't think of the idea, so there's gonna be some negativity on my end, but I just have to keep going. What really keeps me going is the love that my mom and dad showed, which I carry with me daily. My mom's nickname was B, so anything we see with BEE, we just associate it with her. So I'm just gonna keep going and doing what I can do. If I can help one person a day or make one person smile, I've done the work that God wants me to do.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell her to go for it. Never set a limit on what you can do. My Purses for Purpose event is something that I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now, and I just procrastinated about it. Then one day, I was just listening to gospel music and I heard God's voice saying, it's time. Stop procrastinating, it's time for you to fulfill your purpose, to walk in your purpose. So I would tell her, whatever you want to set your mind to, just do it. Don't ever think that you can't achieve something. Last year on Father's Day, I posted on my personal page that I wanted to get the men dressed up, get them a haircut, and make them feel good about themselves. I just wanted to go around and do this, and now here in 2026, another one of my visions is coming to pass. So I would tell them, just never stop. If something is on your heart to do for somebody, as long as you know you did what's on your heart, just keep moving forward. Don't ever stop. Dreams and visions do come true, whether you write them down or they're in your head. Eventually, it may take some time, but they do come true.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is just seeing how many people are in need out here. I mean, we go through our daily struggles working, we have a house, we work, and we have bills, but it's still a struggle. But the biggest struggle is just the need of things that people need. Some of the stories that you hear just break my heart. So those are my biggest challenges with what I do. It's the different stories that you hear, or how they got out there on the streets, or what a person is going through, and they can't find any help. That's just one of my biggest challenges of dealing with that.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

You've got to value people's hearts and their time. So many people go through stuff, and you just want to make sure that you're giving them your full attention when you're listening to them. You have to value their opinions. Opinions are always good to hear. You always need feedback on how you're doing, or something that you probably can do better, or getting ideas like, hey, you're on this journey, I think you should try this. So you just always value everybody's opinions and respect them with the utmost respect.
